I think it is a great rule and I would love to see UEFA bring it in FIFA their competitions.

I tell you why.

We often see European second legs where a team is 2-0 down from the first leg and take a lead in the second leg at home.

United versus the RS in the EL last season is a good example of this.

That was turning into a great match as United pressed for the aggregate equaliser.

Then the RS, 2-0 up from their home leg, broke away and equalised on the night with about half an hour left and the life was just sucked out the game as United then needed another two goals to win.

That wouldn't happen in the EFL Cup with their rule.....even if the go into five minutes of injury time in the ninety the tie is still very much alive.

I agree with your point about the away goal being scrapped in extra time, though.....the away team in the second leg is given a definite advantage and if they score early on, the chances of the home team winning the tie virtually disappear rendering the last twenty five minutes or so academic.
another 3 goals surely

So are you saying scrap away goals altogether then? That's all I can extract from your post. If Utd didn't want to score 3, then they should've got themselves a goal in the first leg!

They'll get through alright, nothing surer.

Fine opportunity this for Krapp to build on his stellar record in cup finals.

You have to hand it to him, they haven't bottled a single one.

Yep, 4-0 thrashing coming up for Southampton at the pit. 2 legged ties are so beneficial for the RS when the second leg is always at Anfield. Even in that Europa League run they lost to Dortmund and Villarreal yet somehow made the final. As soon as they got to a neutral ground they bottled it.

No, I am saying that the EFL away goal rule is better than the existing UEFA one IMO because it means an exciting game is not cut off at the knees with the away team scoring when the game is delicately balanced.

Just like happened at OT last season.

In short, don't bring away goals into play at the end of ninety minutes, wait until after extra time is played.

But that if UEFA do not want to adopt that system then your point about any goals scored by the away team in extra time should not count as double on account of that team had an extra half hour in which to score one is a solid one.

I think that is what you meant, anyway.

:)

But what I don't grasp is why you think away goals shouldn't count after 180 mins? Both sides have had 90 mins each to score away goals. If one side has scored more away goals than the other, they should win, there and then.

Nope.

It ain't me saying that, pardner.

You said you didn't want away goals scored in extra time to count as double.

I was just agreeing with you.
