I know transfer fees have got even crazier in the period since we sold him, but back then I'm not sure we could have squeezed anymore out of another club and he was definitely off

Employ SPL managers, you get SPL performances.
He was really only 35 Million, with it going up to 50 if certain conditions were met, and I doubt they all were, so I bet the profit was considerably more than that
