No. Three defending champions have failed to qualify Spain in 1968, Italy in 1972 and France in 1988
The format was expanded for the European Championship in 1996
You have to be pretty bad to fail to qualify for the euros these days
Or Luther Blisset
Other than Hargreaves, everyone else you've mentioned was raised in England.
So no, it isn't the same as people like Glaswegian Haughton, Yorkshireman Mick McCarthy, scouser John Aldridge, cockney Andy Townsend etc etc
And that was kind of the point

Yeah I can remember them. 8 teams only then straight to the semis. I guess maybe the increase generally in quality of European teams? For example there were countries like Turkey who were whipping boys in the 80s but improved quite a lot in the 90s. Probably other examples of that tooWhat was interesting (for me, anyway) was the caveat since the Euros were expanded, I would have put real money on 92 or 88 even being a sixteen team tournament.
Imagine UEFA or FIFA running such a streamlined event now, it's unthinkable. You can argue the break up of the Soviet Union, but perhaps more, Yugoslavia, were driving factors but it's shaken me a bit to realise how much these tournaments have changed in my lifetime.
Feeling my age here.
Im here now, still singing it. Well done England, great result.'God save the king' and 'Sweet Caroline' being sung at Wembley. I hope that Davek is enjoying the singalong.
Spurs winning the title (or any cup) and Bayern not would be the funniest football even in a long time
He’s got everything hasn’t he? Even Gazza close control v Leyton orient class. No, he’s one who is genuinely worth the press hype . I think he made a good move in going abroad to get away from the ‘inbred’ media in this country. Wears shinnies in heads and vols as wellHe reminds me of Zidane. Not arsed if people want to laugh at that, come back in 10 years time and see if you’re still laughing.

Harry Maguire really helping himself this morning, with comments and judgment about England fans booing ex-footballer Henderson.
