why have england decided to play two warm up games against teams the same calibre as costa rica (a game they should be winning without needing to get use to etc.) when they have to get past one of two much better teams and then if they get through, even harder teams again???

it just doesn't make sense to me and isn't ideal at all. even wales have a warm-up with the netherlands for um well, nothing. pretty sure they should have tested themselves with two difficult warm ups to test style, personnel, formation because they'll have to set up differently as they do vs costa rica.
Not sure I understand your Wales comparison, it anything it means the Netherlands have picked an even more unsuitable opponent than England have.

You have to take morale into account, we don't want to be up against it the whole time, and 3 defeats in the warm-ups would be terrible.

We want relatively easy opponents, let the players play with a bit of a swagger and get their confidence up.

the wales part was tounge in cheek. it's not a great decision by netherlands either seeing as they have a tough group as well.

just seems england have chosen two warm up matches very similar to a costa rica, so they'll be well prepared for that game, but won't be for the more important games where they need to get something out of to qualify.

they should be confident enough to know they can beat costa rica and better prepare for the other two and any future games in the comp. they say you learn more in defeat etc.

i doubt they've learned anything from that first half except half their squad is tosh and they're dull to watch.

I would actually play a friendly against someone total bad.

Like San Marino or whatever. Proper confidence builder by smashing a minnow. Then 2 more serious friendlies.

No changes at half time in a pre-tournament warmup match, after a dire first half performance - that's the progressive thinking that makes Roy so special (n)
