England should go 3 at the back Stones, Jags and Cahill - The absence of a decent RB will be the achilles heel in a back 4

this wouldn't be the worst idea. you could have milner and baines as wing backs.

think this would be a really good idea actually, if it weren't for the fact that it means they would have to play an extra centre mid - a position england are glaringly weak at and without any wingers when i think AOC is england's best player atm.

unless they play one man up front and play a flat midfield 4, but that means one of rooney or sturridge - roy wouldn't have the balls. i reckon it would work for england. they'll get ripped by any decent team with a marauding right back in johnson making it a 3 man defence and then the very old gerrard "protecting" the defence.

The main problem as you identified is that you have to shoehorn Gerrard into the side regardless of formation
