Surely the fact that SAF rated him using him regularly in a title winning side suggests he must have something about him? I think this would defo be a mccarthy like signing and surprise a lot of us. Welbeck I'm less sure about only because he seems quite one dimensional in his play and I can't see him developing much.

SAF absolutely loves him. Put lots of faith in him.

I really like Welbeck.

When played as a striker he has a fairly good record (9 goals in 20 games this season) and about a 1 in 2 strike rate for England.

However he is on about £90k a week at Man Utd so I'm not sure he is in our price range.

I'd be delighted if we signed Welbeck, he's a good striker who would benefit from more starts. Cleverley has become a poster boy for United's failure but he suffered from being put in unfamiliar positions in a team that had no intention of playing for their manager. I don't see where he'd fit in the team, but he has ability.

Any midfielder would look poor next to Fellaini. Carrick and Cleverley went from title winning England regulars to missing the entire squad. Arteta was awful for us with Fellaini and Rodwell went from Beckenbauer to the grand crab. Shows how good Gibson is that he could still play his natural game.

I'd take Cleverley, its clear Roberto doesnt primarily value creativity in his two holding midfielders. Instead our penetration comes from the front four and our full backs. The midfield is used for covering the gaps, retaining the ball, and shifting the opposition midfield around to allow good balls wide from the centrebacks.

If Cleverley understands this then rather him than some fancy creative mid who'll give you one game out of four and doesnt track runners. Good to see us targeting young British and Irish talent as well.

Centre mids I've thought would be [Poor language removed] for us and have been anything from decent to great:
Neville
Gibson
Naismith
McCarthy
Barry

So, basically, I'm going to keep my mouth shut and wait to see him play, for fear of brutal vaulting in a year's time.

Dont worry about being vaulted on Neville mate, he was indeed turbo, hyperspeed, faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings at a single boud levels of gashness

Harsh, he took the stick for everything bad about the Moyes years but at times last season he was starting in a team that was wiping the floor with sides, i particularly remember Southampton at home and Swansea away. Was it his fault Gibson was injured most of the season. He was a decent holding mid and a decent full back. Bear in mind it was his retirement season as well. In his prime with us he was a useful player and a step up from some other players in terms of attitude and professionalism.

Nah Neville was decent for a few seasons. An upgrade at RB on Hibbert and at CM on Simon Davies or whoever we had playing there at that point

Will be honest mate, I never ever rated him, thought from day one he became the yes man for Moyes on the field and embodied every negative trait that the manager had without any of the positive ones, players of his calibre being automatic shoe ins was a massive reason for never being able to push on

The post i'm responding too is about centre mids though mate, neville was decent at rb, cm was horrid imo,

Jack Cork doesn't seem to start for Southampton and we're better than them so surely we can do better than picking up their benchwarmers? Sounds like a midfield destroyer - I'm basing that purely on the fact that he's never scored for them. So he must be something. Then again, his middle name is Porteous. PORTEOUS.

SOLD

Fair enough. My own view is that Neville shouldn't have been a decent centre mid, and he never looked like one in isolation, but somehow we always played our best football with him playing there. But back to the point - Porteous, really? Porteous? Give that man the armband.
