Tom Cleverley looked really good a few years back, especially at the start of the 2011-12 season, but had a setback after Kevin Davies' horror tackle. He has since shown how good he can be in patches, but this season he seems to have completely lost his confidence this season, and has, like the rest of the Utd team put on a several lackadaisical appearances.

On his better days, Cleverley can offer pace and urgency to a midfield, which is why many United fans still wants him to stay on. I think Van Gaal will look for some new signings in the midifeld, and Cleverley will risk being benched for United. If Everton signs him, I think he could be a decent signing, depending on the fee. If he gets his confidence back up, and Martinez is hard on him when he's complacent I think he could carve himself a good career for Everton.

Am I right in thinking that Martinez has worked with him before? He got a lot out of him then, I think.

Can only be a good thing if he's a serious target. Look at McCarthy.

Yeah, that would be the 2010-11 season, at Wigan. He had a really good loan spell there. If I remember correctly, Wigan wanted to extend the loan, but United wanted him to join the first team for the following season. He played every game at the start of the season until the injury v Bolton, which left him out for a little over a month, and after that he didn't perform as he did before the injury. He seemed a bit hesitant in challenges etc, but eventually got back into the team.

---

Martinez had some comments on him in March this year:

"There are only a few players in this country who have had the sort of education where they look as if they could have been brought up in Holland, Spain or France," he said. "Tom is one of them. I just don't understand this campaign, it is not the way to encourage young players.

"Maybe he has been given a bigger role than he should have been given but even so it is ridiculous to put someone so young in the spotlight then knock him down. We as a public are to blame if we allow that to happen. You have to help young players reach a level.

"What has happened is not Tom's fault, I think he is as good a talent as we have in the English game, and he is still growing. You wouldn't get this in other countries, and I find it disappointing that he is being judged so aggressively when he has not even reached 200 games. Such a young player does not need that sort of scrutiny or pressure, but I am sure he will come through it and be even more motivated."

Source.

No swearing please, including swear filter dodging
Kone, Birdman, Roubles add Tom Cleverley and that's one **** Sandwich.

hmm, i fail to see how he would improve us. like we say, diame will be available for the same fee and a much better player and would be a very handy backup for mccarthy.

Apparently Diame doesn't have an anterior cruciate ligament, he tore it but has enough stability in his knee without needing reconstructive surgery. I too think he is a good player, im no physio but I wonder if clubs are wary about that as it could potentially be serious if he were to get anothee knee injury. Just a thought as hed be a useful signing for a lot of teams.

Also has a heart condition similar to fabrice Muamba. The medical staff at whichever club he is at have to have a defibrillator on hand at all times, he rarely completes more than 70 minutes in a game.

he'd only be backup for us anyway.

suppose it's pointless having another backup that we can't be sure isn't always fit as we've seen with gibson and alcaraz.

Full 90 minutes 16 times this season, 80+ another three times...

That's more than I thought, he played in 41 games though so still quite a low percentage. As fans we get attached to the players at the club, I would hate to see one of ours in a situation like Fabrice, it sounds harsh but I wouldn't sign him because of this and the knee problem, to bigger risk.

Arsenal must have cottoned on to the quality of his wife...reports they are in for him now. It appears Arsenal's scout system motto is : see who's rumoured to go to Everton and go for that player.

I'd prefer Lewis Holtby over either diame or Cleverley. Think diame is overatted by most on here.

Not keen on Diame myself either mate.

Seems to step up against the big teams and be a bit average against the rest. Having said that, if his release clause really is £3.5m, he is definitely worth that.

Far from convinced on Holtby though. I think I started to hate him last summer, or the one before when people kept banging on about him. Tadic is doing that this summer!

As for Clevs. There's arguments for and against. He had a horrible season last. And wasn't much better the one before that. But Martinez knows him so let's see.
