I don't reckon we'll see Barkley at centre mid for a while yet, so Cleverley will presumably compete with him for an attacking mid spot. He isn't the foreign playmaker we were promised though so maybe not. Quite like the clev but it's hard to see where he'll slot in.

Cleverley isn't a long-term replacement for Barry. I think that's Besic, and would be Gibbo if he could ever stay fit. But that type of player needs a 'runner' beside him, at the moment we've just got McCarthy. Cleverly will be able to cover that position, but also fill in the Osman/Pienaar role if needed, though I do think that's where the 'No.10' will play should we bring one in as RM said.

With @MoutsGoat on that point. Nothing wrong with this signing if it goes through - I think he's a decent player with a lot of experience who adds depth and quality to the squad - but we still need a playmaker.

Ive just looked at the squad numbers and it pains me to say, that if he signs, The Clev is likely to take the number 5 shirt.

Apparently though popular opinion is 'Gibson needs shipping out, along with the other deadwood like Osman and Pienaar'. Don't know where some people think the goals are going to come from when our three most creative midfielders aren't in the squad. Like you said it's a team of crabs and it wouldn't make any difference if we had Ronaldo and Messi upfront we still wouldn't have any interest in playing any forward passes to them.
