It's interesting, this argument about academy products. I think we expect more because we like to see locals in the team, in an age when most Prem teams are international, and it kind of gives our club an authentic, local feel.
If our academy is amongst the best, which I think is true, then we also expect more players to go on and make it to the first team. So what is success anyway?
Let's say the benchmark is the golden generation of Man U players, - the Scholes, Giggs, Becks, Neville, Butt era - that's an unrealistic, freak of nature, where many things combined to create a successful crop of players who were also given a chance, also had a great manager, and also had a few added ingredients of top internationals.

Soa successful academy means that every 2 - 3 years, we should see 1 player make it to the first team as a regular, maybe 1 other as a squad player, and 2 others go on to Championship to make it as regular first teamers?

Do you think Lookman, Davies, Dowell, Kenny, DCL and Beni are above average at their age and can be a core of the team in the future?

At the moment, I only see Gosling, Duffy, ...anyone else? ... as ex-Academy who are making a name in the Premier League?

If you look at the fees that Liverpool have been getting for the likes of Ibe and Solanke, it makes sense to tie Davies down for as long as he's willing earn a squad filler's wage. I don't think he's ever going to be good enough to be a starter here, but when the time is right he should fetch a reasonable amount of money from a club more suited to his level.

Tom Davis is a good young lad that has come out of the academy and played ok for the 1st team when was called on! Maybe Silva/Brands have an idea to balance the game time of him due to the amount of games he has played over the previous 2 seasons maybe? Remember he played 20 odd and then 30 odd last season! At PSV, Brands played younger players into the team over a period of time so maybe they see at present with senior players of Gana, Gomes, Schneiderlin, McCarthy now etc that its possible to have him trained more into a fixed role going forward as like people are saying he does'nt have a fixed role as he should play in squad? He is a good local lad, has determination and seems to be a liked player in squad by all so lets see what happens with him as he matures and is nurtured into a midfield position ?

Definitely seems like a long-term play, there's still potential to become a better player while serving a utilitarian role depending on the team we're playing against and the tactics Marco's going to go with for the opponent. At the very least, the new deal locks him in for future transfer fees.

Gosling wasn't our academy. We brought him in.

Have you forgotten "tuuurrrrnnnnn Ross" already.?

Other than that I can't think of any.

My view on loaning players is this.
If they are surplus to requirements and we are trying to sell them then loaning them out is the only option until they are sold.
If they are in the first team squad and we don’t want to sell them then they should not go out on loan.
If they are progressing from youth football and not considered to be quite good enough for the first team squad then they should be loaned out for a maximum period of 2 seasons. If they haven’t proved good enough for the first team squad after that period they should be sold or released. That would mean players such as Pennington,Browning(I know he’s left) Garbutt and Galloway would be gone before this season.
That will mean that Dowell,Robinson and Williams should either be in the first team squad next season or sold.

Im not so sure about that. In nearly 4 years he may well have played around 70 games but still nobody is quite sure what actually he is or what qualities he actually has. He is not a defensive midfielder as his tackling and positional play is not good enough, he is not an attacking midfielder as he gives the ball away too much (this may improve over time) he does'nt really score goals or create stuff, all he really does is run around a lot. Don't get me wrong, im not against him as a player i just don't see him as a midfielder, id actually like to make use of that engine of his and make him into a fullback if it was up to me.

He may not be quite good enough for us and where we want to be in a few years time, the jury is still out on that (as it should be as he is 20 years old) but the people saying he is not a premier league player are wrong. If we were to get rid of him a Premier league side would play him and he would be perfectly fine playing for a team lower down the division.

He scored 57 times for Everton. That's not to be sniffed at.

It was over a period of time when Everton were decent as well and he always started.

Yeah, a regular starter in a side who generally always finished best of the rest. He couldn't have been that bad.

davies will start tonight ahead of morgan I reckon, no need for both morgan and gana against burnley at home

davies will get forward a bit more and join the attack, something he does quite well

think so too tbh, only because of the new contract though.

If he does, he will slot in to the number 8 role Gana has been performing, with Gana dropping back to number 6.

It's a good match for him to start.
