2021/22 Tom Davies

why does he have to play the ball square or backwards? It’s not rugby .. he needs to roll it in front of Mina so he can run onto it and finish

Unless davies has the vision of a world class player he doesnt play in a first time ball hoping mina runs from an onside position to finish it. He looks across. See's mina, who is now offside, and then plays a forward pass to an offside player. Its virtualy impossible for davies to play a pass to mina onside as the defender clears it.
Why is this lost on so many people.

The question should be “is Tom Davies good enough for us?”

It shouldn’t be used as a deciding factor in being labelled a Goodison father. His locality shouldn’t be taken into account. The fact he dresses like the blue rinse brigade is irrelevant.

Is he up to the job? Yes or no.
The question is does RB think he is good enough for us ?

Go back about six weeks and if you asked that question on GOT about Gray and Townsend the answer would have been no.

at some point he needs to push on if he has it in his locker. Eventually in an ideal world, we need players who are pushing for starts in the squad, it is no good having players who know they are nailed on top start, it can effect motivation.

It is why I can't understand the Rondon signing, 1 year would have been bad enough but 2, mental. We need a better quality standard of back up players if we are to progress up the table. The drop off in quality is quite big and that leaves us at a disadvantage and praying players don't get bad injuries.

Tom needs to kick on now, he won't get many more chances I suspect.

mate…. I didn’t play football at any sort of impressive level… and I wouldn’t have passed that ball to an offside player. If he looks up and sees that Mina is RUNNING and that he is level…. Then takes a second to then play the pass. You don’t need to be world class to know he’s probably in an offside position. He plays football every day these decisions aren’t even made consciously… much like strikers that can finish with easy with no time to think… why is that so hard to understand. The difference is that he looked up and he should have known he was off… Mina should have realised he was moving ahead of the ball but davies should have realised that he either needed to take a touch and shoot or take a touch and make sure Mina was not offside before playing it

Thats what i said. There was no pass on.
The only pass on there was a first time pass into the space while mina was onside. But thats a david silva or kevin de bruyne pass. No first touch. Just instinctive vision to play someone in before they have even moved(mina). But many dont have that not just davies. Thats what you pay the big bucks for.
All this blaming mina. He's a big galoot centre half. Not a play on the shoulder centre forward.
This has been done to death now.
Davies should have had a shot. He never.
Thats it.

Benitez's immediate response supporting Davies' decision-making felt like very good man management (despite his reputation for being cold/uncaring)
Yes, the perception is that any manager (in any field) has a particular 'style', but the reality is that isn't how anyone becomes a successful manager.

Management is about mutual understanding, ultimately. People are different and respond better to different approaches.

Rafalafel wouldn't be desperate to bring in Longstaff to go ahead of him as cover for Allan, if he thought he was good enough.
