The only time he got it wrong was when he went round the keeper. He should have taken a touch and rolled it to DCL.

The other times he had a go I don't blame him. He just failed to hit the target.
But in games where the chances fall to him, we need them hitting the target mate. That's the point, lewen misses and he was the difference between a win and a draw yesterday.

If we want to take ourselves to the next level then that's how. Take those chances especially in games where we don't have the freedom to have as many as we did.

He has the ability to do it, make a habit and he may just come close to the bosses target .

Notable for me was that richarlison was not the be all and end all focus of our attacking threat.

Post-lockdown games (including spurs) were characterized by him being targeted and kicked off his game meaning we had nothing going forwards. Today he was just one of the team, and did very well attacking the box repeatedly. Obviously another day he bags a brace but there will be games that he smashes it due to teams having to also focus on james and the central threat from midfielders who can pick a forwards pass.

That for me is the most exciting aspect of what could be.

There's plenty to work on. We should have scored the second goal to make it a comfortable final 15 minutes.

But it's not a major concern for me. Richarlison will score goals and I don't think the misses yesterday will effect him. He was a threat throughout the match and Doherty had a tough afternoon.

What nobody else is saying

There was an issue yesterday that hopefully disappears over the coming weeks. Richarlison missing so many chances and not looking for anything other than a shot has to disappear very quickly or it will cost us in the long run.

You can chalk up it being the first game of the season and everything else he did but if it were not for Calvert lewen, we would have dropped 2 points based on the wastefulness in front of goal.

If richarlison can bring more creativity into his role in that set up for lewen and perhaps hit the target a little bit more then we have the makings of a deadly front 3. Man mark Rodriguez whilst richarlison is ripping your right back to shreds , creates problems both sides , and different problems.

Either way, with his goal, lewen looked like he can be that player for us again. Not going to match the wide two for creativity but the right ball in the right place and bang, it's a goal. I said it weeks ago, that's what lewen needs, to take that once chance a game. He does that then he becomes a great player .

It's clear that in this side he will have a lot more chances than lewen will , given how often Rodriguez looked for him in space. Have lewen for those half chances and richarlison to drive at the defence.

Yeah, goals win games though. Those chances missed 3 months from now would be costly.

I'm only saying what others will say further down the line. He has to be clinical for us to go to the next level, that's clearly his role in the attack.
He will get plenty of goals this year no doubt with that service. He had a goal record last year n an average team so I wont be worrying

You know why I will gladly admit that Pickford had a really good game? How many times did he come out and clobber a player punching a ball away or even claiming the ball outright? He hasn't done that in....I genuinely don't recall if he ever did.

Not really a Pickford fan but he did come right out of the 6 yard box to punch away quite convincingly yesterday, not sure he clattered anyone though.

Made a couple of great saves too.

As someone else mentioned earlier, his only fault yesterday was to punt balls down the pitch to nobody in particular. I wonder if anyone told him that the cross bar challenge has to be in the same ground and not the other end of Stanley Park.
