Tour de France 07

well, I'm certainly not calling for the end of the tour de france I think its a great event.

I'd love the technology to get to a place where they can take instant tests anytime, anyplace, anywhere.

Serioiusly though, how these cyclists can win anything and be happy about it having taken drugs is beyond me.

cyclists dont take steroids, there is a defference between steroids and performance enhancers.

the drug EPO means an athletes blood can carry more oxygen which means they can push further and harder (calm it chico) than an athlete in the same event that is clean.

americas olympic 100m champion justin gatlin has failed drugs tests. he didnt get the ben johnson treatment though. (for the olympics) Although he is now serving an 8 year track and field ban.

On July 29, 2006 Justin Gatlin told the media that he had been informed by the USADA that he had given a positive doping test in April the same year. He did, however, claim his innocence in the matter: "I cannot account for these results, because I have never knowingly used any banned substance or authorised anyone to administer such a substance to me."

The substance that it is believed that Gatlin has being tested positive was "testosterone or its precursor". The failed test was revealed after a relay race on April 22, 2006 in Lawrence, Kansas, USA. The "B" sample was confirmed as positive in July.

Gatlin is coached by Trevor Graham. Among athletes Graham has coached, eight have tested positive or received bans for performance enhancing drugs. After Gatlin's failed test, Graham stated in an interview that Gatlin had been sabotaged. Specifically, he blamed massage therapist Christopher Whetstine, for rubbing a creme with testosterone onto Gatlin without his knowledge. The therapist denied this claim, saying: "Trevor Graham is not speaking on behalf of Justin Gatlin and the story about me is not true!"

On August 22, 2006 Gatlin agreed to an eight year ban from track and field, avoiding a lifetime ban in exchange for his cooperation with the doping authorities, and because of the "exceptional circumstances" surrounding his first positive drug test.

A cheat and a rat. kudos indeed.

Rasmussen is kicked out from the tour.. BY HIS OWN TEAM! For breaking internal rules (telling lies about where he was to his team while training).

i said first day millar shouldnt be there.

i stick by that.

scum! worse still, drug taking cheating scum.

more drugs more cyclists being kicked off the tour...

this is what people see when they go to bbc sport, instead of some article about who actually won what happened etc...

sad.

Crikey, I didn't see this one coming. Last night it looked as though Rasmussen had the Tour in the bag, now he hasn't even got a bag!

I suppose it is good for the Tour, at least now the winner will (hopefully) be clean with no doubt surrounding them. Crazy few days.

I´m not 100 % sure of that, since they ( contador, Evans) is some of the names mentioned in Operation Puerto. I´ve seen all TDF the last 9 years, and i have loved every second of it, until last year. When Landis did that extreme mountain winnig the day after he cracked so heavily, i know that it was something going on, and after seen Vino and Rasmussen doing the same this year i know it again. Vino partly on the time trial, and the mountain win, and Rasmiussen definitely on the time trial. He usually misses out at least 4-5 minutes on those ones, he was nr 13!

It´s soo sad, Remember Festina -98 and all the talk about the death of the sport, well, this time it is closer than ever.

I´m sad and dissapointed, and want see the rest of this years tour.

I'm not defending Rasmussen in any way, but his result on the TT is also somewhat down to the fact that he had much better weather when he did it than the specialists who did the same run 20 minutes before him, also wearing the Jersey helps a bit. That said I still find his strange behaviour when reporting his wereabouts very suspect. It's one thing to say you're at home at 12.00 and instead being at the local grocerystore at that time, but saying you're in Mexivo when you're in Italy?

I just wish the cycklingteams band together and refuse to sign anyone who have had any connection to any illegal substances. Only way to show the athletes that what they do isn't ok. As it is now when a rider have served his 2 years ban, some teams are desperate to sign them to get a "good" biker.

Plus the TT had a climb in it, which was clearly beneficial to Rasmussen. He's actually passed all the drugs tests this Tour so I don't think he's been taking anything. But he's clearly made some ridiculous mistakes and he shouldn't really have been allowed to start the Tour, thus avoiding another fiasco.

Did Rasmussen have any in competition tests around the time he missed his tests? If he didn't then he might have used the 'pre-season' to get in shape before ditching the dope for the races.

He's always been able to win the odd mountain stage but has never had the strength to maintain his form over three weeks. This year he's not only won two mountain stages but witheld attack after attack from both Astana and Discovery.

No, no in competition test for at least 3 weeks before the race. and no other test during this time either.

I like this one: " my wife´s nanny send the letter from Italy, she was there and visited some family". Yeah right. I don´t say that he is on dope now, but during preparationtime, well, yeah.

You should have a go riding one of the stages Chico ;) Then do it again the next day, and the next for three weeks. Whilst I don't condone doping I can certainly understand why they do it.
