Substitutes

Substitutes were first allowed in the 1965-66 season, but only in League matches. The FA Cup did not use subs until the 1966-67 season.

In the first season, substitutes were only allowed when a player was injured. However, near to the end of the season, players were pretending to be injured to allow the sub to come on, hence the League changed the rules the following season to allow a sub whenever a team wanted to, even for tactical reasons.

Everton's First Sub
Everton's first substitute was John Hurst who replaced Fred Pickering as Pickering was injured whilst scoring Everton's only goal in a 1:1 draw at Stoke City in the third game of the season (28 Aug 1965).

Everton's first substitute at Goodison Park was also the first goalkeeping sub, when Andy Rankin replaced the injured Gordon West against Nuremberg in the 1966 Fairs Cup (the precursor to the Uefa Cup) on 12 Oct 1965.

The first goal-scoring sub was Sandy Brown who came on for Fred Pickering in the Goodison Derby on 27 Aug 1966 and scored in a 3:1 victory over Liverpool (Alan Ball scored the other two).

Cup Final Subs
Everton's sub for the 1968 Cup Final was Alex Young who wasn't used, but West Brom's sub, Dennis Clarke, was used and became the first Cup Final sub.

• 1986 - Adrian Heath (replaced Gary Stevens)

Stuart McCall made FA Cup history when he became the first substitute to score 2 goals in an FA Cup final. Unfortunately, Ian Rush matched the feat in the same game when he scored the winner in the 2:3 defeat.
Duncan Ferguson: Super Sub
The only substitute to score 2 goals at Goodison Park was Duncan Ferguson when he got 2 in a 3:0 win over Charlton Athletic on 23 Aug 2000.
