Substitutes

Substitutes were first allowed in the 1965-66 season, but only in League matches. The FA Cup did not use subs until the 1966-67 season.

In the first season, substitutes were only allowed when a player was injured. However, near to the end of the season, players were pretending to be injured to allow the sub to come on, hence the League changed the rules the following season to allow a sub whenever a team wanted to, even for tactical reasons.

Everton's First Sub
Everton's first substitute was John Hurst who replaced Fred Pickering as Pickering was injured whilst scoring Everton's only goal in a 1:1 draw at Stoke City in the third game of the season (28 Aug 1965).

Everton's first substitute at Goodison Park was also the first goalkeeping sub, when Andy Rankin replaced the injured Gordon West against Nuremberg in the 1966 Fairs Cup (the precursor to the Uefa Cup) on 12 Oct 1965.

The first goal-scoring sub was Sandy Brown who came on for Fred Pickering in the Goodison Derby on 27 Aug 1966 and scored in a 3:1 victory over Liverpool (Alan Ball scored the other two).

Cup Final Subs
Everton's sub for the 1968 Cup Final was Alex Young who wasn't used, but West Brom's sub, Dennis Clarke, was used and became the first Cup Final sub.

The other Cup Final subs have been:

  • 1984 - Alan Harper (not used)
  • 1985 - Alan Harper (not used)
  • 1986 - Adrian Heath (replaced Gary Stevens)
  • 1989 - Stuart McCall (replaced Paul Bracewell) and Ian Wilson (replaced Kevin Sheedy)
  • 1995 - Duncan Ferguson (replaced Paul Rideout), Daniel Amokachi (replaced Anders Limpar) and Jason Kearton (not used)
Stuart McCall made FA Cup history when he became the first substitute to score 2 goals in an FA Cup final. Unfortunately, Ian Rush matched the feat in the same game when he scored the winner in the 2:3 defeat.
Duncan Ferguson: Super Sub
The only substitute to score 2 goals at Goodison Park was Duncan Ferguson when he got 2 in a 3:0 win over Charlton Athletic on 23 Aug 2000.
John Hurst would've done mate lol

Not a question, but is the following correct?

Every former Everton player who has managed Everton was a trophy winner as a player.

Cliff Britton
Harry Catterick
Billy Bingham
Howard Kendal
(Jimmy Gabriel caretaker)
Colin Harvey
(Dave Watson caretaker)
Joe Royle

Unsworth next?

Also since the Second World War, only ex-Everton players have won something as our manager.

Wow, if right that's a great spot @Groucho

Aha, I think one spotted a flaw above - Harry Catterick was on the books for a title win, but is he listed as a title winning player?

Did Sandy score in the correct end on that occasion?

Or Tommy Jones?

What was the question? I can't find it! An exEverton player named Higgins was player manager of Bangor City at some point in the 1950s...I used to watch Bootle play in the Lancashire Combination at Seaforth Dog Track and remember a couple of cup ties against Bangor...and 'Dirty Higgins'. this was at the time when Alec Stephenson was player manager of Bootle. I also watched Marine around the same time and have a memory(might be wrong!) of Jimmy O'neill playing briefly for Marine...who had a couple of players who went on to play league football...a winger named Harry Connor went on to play for Stoke, and I think theres a couple of Woan brothers in the league at present...they will be descendents of the Alan Woan who played for Bootle in the 50s? Anyone else old enough to confirm or add to this?

..sorry Steve, most of this is before my time. I'm sure lots of folk remember Ian Woan at Notts Forest who was from this part of the world.
