TV Series

Wednesday

I really liked the series in general. Even if Tim Burton isn't in prime, he can do an above-average job from what he's got. But there are two big problems. The first is the inability to leave the safe area. When Tim Burton is mentioned, cult films such as Mars Attacks!, Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride are similar to no other films that come to mind. But Wednesday, like every fantasy series around, stuck to the trend.

The other problem is that the show thinks itself a little too smart. It was pretty easy to guess who Hyde was, for example. But we watched this mystery for episodes. I'm bored as it is. But it still felt nice to be in a slightly Harry Potter-esque version of a gothic pastime from my childhood.

We are about half way through Rings of Power and really like it. It's too much for the Mrs Nigh so we can't watch on back to back nights, but I suspect we will catch up over the next 2 weeks.

I had seen a few episodes of Andor and enjoyed it but not caught back up yet; I've read many people say the first season ends brilliantly.

Andor is fantastic, the whole way through. Brilliant characters and acting to boot.

Rings Of Power - not my favorite.

IMO ROP is more true to Tolkien's writing than is Jackson's on-screen orcgasms, but I've had people tell me that it's too slow for them. And I'm sure some find the stories uninteresting. But I also really enjoy reading LOTR and so this fills in some story in very fun ways. Also, I think the writing is very good; I've tried to ignore spoilers and have watched the first 4 episodes 2x each (mostly by chance) and there are many allusions to the later stories, although I don't yet understand them.

Nah. They messed with the story WAY more in ROP.

I am talking writing/style above; all new narrative bends the canon somewhat, I can't remember the last time I watched something that "fit" perfectly.

Ah, maybe just needed to rewrite your opening post then. Being true to his writing = is it canon and whilst Jackson changed bits for LOTR, and a lot for the Hobbit, ROP is basically set in a different dimension.

I've not finished ROP (and don't want spoilers) but from what I can tell it's inter-canon; Jackson changed a lot for the movies but gets a free pass because he didn't fail the book (which is to his credit), but the style is hugely different. It's like someone from a different ethnic background re-created your favorite food from their perspective. It checks and does not check at the same time.

Come back to me after you've finished it and we can discuss lol

My mid-series report card, on characters and content:

Elves: seem true to character, like the focus on Galadriel and Elrond; have some questions re: plot
Halflings: true to character, like the plot so far
Man who fell from the Stars: the clues here are obvious, no issues yet, interested to see how this plays out
Dwarves: love all of this
Numenoreans: seems to fit, no issues yet
Southlanders: obviously there is a lot to develop here, interested to see how this plays out

Elves: They're fine
Halflings: They're a whatever, could have cut them from the show
