TV Series

Is it that bad? My brother is head of year at a school and some of the stuff I hear is mental. When he first started in the early 2000s he was told just to keep the kids in school and if they learned anything it's a bonus.

Living in Spain now with an 8 year old and looking back at the UK the education system does seem troubled.

In addition a lot of stuff they learn is both boring and useless though this doesn't justify stabbing someone to death

It’s the best adaption I’ve seen of how schools are nowadays. Obviously not all schools are like that but majority are sadly. Every year, the behaviour and attitude gets worse of learners. Unless something is drastically done in the next few decades, god knows what it’s going to be like in the future.

Just last week, I was down south in an alternative provision, every kid had to be wand down in case of weapons they brought in. 3 learners carrying knives.

Education is so outdated in this country. You’re right, it’s boring to them. The rise of smart phones, social media, consoles and the fact classes are over crowded doesn’t help. It needs a massive overhaul, not just school but how kids are looked at.

BTW I Thought it was brilliant and harrowing.Touching on the excellent points you made........I live in Greece and the worst thing I have to do is ask them to keep the noise down. However I was called a Paedo by 1 of them and started filming.2 days later they turned up and we talked football and I now run their team, kits supplied by me.Their is hope but like you say action needs to be taken across the globe x

It’s not too late but change is needed, and needed now. The best approach is to treat young people with respect, speak to them with respect, and if they get out of line, be fair but don’t show your scared of them. If you show any fear, they can eat you alive. You’ve gotta find what they are interested in, speak to them about it and take action. You’ll get through to them.

Big issue is, kids are very smart now, they know that the rules have become soft and they can exploit it. They do exploit it because they know they can get away with it. All they need to do is put a sob story on and can be let off with mid behaving or worse.

The Sam Rockwell cameo in the new White Lotus episode was unexpected lol
He just kept going!!!!

The man was Goggins was superb.

Finished Adolescence last night.

That was a tough watch , can't praise Stephen Graham enough for how he put this together , the story as it unfolds is harrowing , the cast & acting are superb.

Hope it brings a much needed in depth look at what kids are subject to at the click of a button. Plus making adults aware of the danger all kids are in once they enter that world.

The look on Erin Doherty's face when the young lad ( brilliantly played by Owen Cooper ) flips will stay with me for a while.

I remember having a dad and lad chat with my eldest lad when he had just turned thirteen, about whether he had a girlfriend.

He looked at me horrified and told me that him and all his mates kept well away from girls, as if you upset them in anyway, they`d ruin your life online, posting stuff about you being a beast or a nonce and once that happened you were finished in the school, so it was just much easier not to get involved with them.

At the time I was quite shocked and thought it was really sad, but having watched Adolescence I now fully understand.

It`s not just in state schools either, as a lot of the lads he played rugby with went to public schools and it was just the same, if not worse for them too.

Its truly frightening especially with the rapid advancement of AI , this could take it to a whole new disasterous level , it's bad enough for adults to come to terms with it.
Young impressionable kids have no chance , a young nieve life can be ruined with the click of a button.

So glad my lad got through that 10 to 20 yr old period , he's more IT savvy than most and has shown me the many benefits that come with it.
At 27 he even admits it was a good thing we limited him with Social media use.
I still believe good parenting is the best way to educate our youngsters and steer them away from the many on line dangers out there.
Its a whole different world away from normal life as we saw in the series with Ashley Walters classroom conversation with his son.

Hopefully there are enough of the right people in this world that will now force these huge companies to restrict content & usage for these very impressionable youngsters.
This superb series could be the catalyst to the changes needed before more lives are ruined.

This series won’t be used as a catalyst to force the changes that are desperately needed. It’s so far gone, and they aren’t even looking at solutions on how to improve it. The ones in charge haven’t got a clue nor care enough to bring changes that are needed. It’s such a deep rooted issue, that people haven’t got a clue about and think it’s an easy fix. It’s not an easy fix. There is a lot more I could go into but don’t wanna offended people.

I’ve got a good relationship with a boxing gym in Warrington, pay for 3 learners from our centre to go 3 days per week out my own pocket, get a lot knocked off, but all 3 have huge potential. They are a product of there environment but just to try get them doing something different than causing trouble or hanging around. The discipline, respect and activity has changed there attitudes massively but still, it’s not enough, because we need to be forcing it on a lot more kids. Kids should be doing more physical education in schools to help.

Valid points you make.

Don't think there's an easy fix as you put it but being highlighted by a hard hitting series I believe will force change.

I just heard this morning it's Neflix's most popular series worldwide , that shows there is a huge interest in it.

As I said earlier it has to be the right people to force change , look at Australia imposing limits and age barriers.
I think the majority of the world will follow suit.
There simply has to be change because unchecked the world is in a whole lot of trouble.
For me it all starts at home and giving these kids alternatives and educate them about the terrifying pitfalls of Social media and the wider IT use.

Anyways
Truly harrowing yet superbly made series.

It raises awareness for certain but nowadays, after a few weeks it will all be forgotten about sadly. It’s great the awareness is there and hopefully it continues to be.

People like to say it starts at home, and it’s on the parents, to some degree, the is truth to that, sometimes there isn’t. A lot of households now have both working parents, who need to work and sometimes can take away from bringing kids up properly. Also a lot of single parents. You can raise a kid the right way, but what happens if they turn out to do something wrong or become naughty/dangerous? Then on the other hand you’ve got a single parent who’s struggled and not been there for the kid as much, turn out to be a perfect example of how young people should be? It’s so difficult isn’t it?

I’m a big believer in no child/young adult should have access to social media(including YouTube etc) until they are at least 18. It should also be heavily monitored. Great example in adolescence was them taking about that Andrew Tate(gobshite) people like him having influence is a scary thought. We need to get real with these kids and stop sugar coating it, stop giving them false hope of telling them, they can be whatever they wanna be in life, seriously they can’t. Kids want you to be real and honest with them, they can see through the BS that people who are meant to be in respectable positions are telling them.

Politicians are failing communities and they need to be held accountable. You know what’s a joke but actually funny, the Ali G film when he becomes a politician and he’s taking about keeping it real, it’s what we need. People calling it out and stopping the nonsense that goes on.
