Personally, and I would be delighted to be proven wrong here, I don't think this lad will cut it with us.

It has nothing to do with his injury

He is an unbelievable athlete, powerful and very fast, but it sort of boils down to the fact that with the ball at his feet he is incredibly limited and I'm not sure how that is ever going to realistically improve enough for him to be a Premier League level defender.

With enough experience, he might develop into a decent centre half at a lesser level team, but his lack of ability on the ball means I can't ever see him as a full back. Holgate has demonstrated what is required in that role.

Hope he does on to have a good career, just doubt it will be with us, not that that's a disgrace - the proportion of young players who break into the fringes of the 1st team and stay and become a fixture is pretty small.

To quote an Everton youth coach who will remain nameless, his problem is "he can't play".

It's a fair point, but I personally think too much importance is placed on being good with the ball. Hibbert was always a far better player defensively and despite the ridicule on here, played in the top flight for a top 7 or 8 side for about 10 years.

An example of someone who is similar to Hibbert and has made it in the Premier League with limited ability on the ball is Phil Bardsley.

That's fair as well, but would you want Hibbert or Bardsley anywhere near the team now?

No, but on the other hand, you've got players like Stones worth £47m for his great ability on the ball and potential when i'd much rather he could just do his job as a defender.

Hopefully Browning will make it for us but I do think if we go in the direction we're aiming, these youngsters are going to have to have a special talent to make it in our squad. Davies looks very good from what i've seen, I hope he makes it as well despite the competition he will inevitably have when we bring in new faces each season.

Surely now is his chance to all those who say he will make it.

...I suppose it depends on the definition of 'make it'. As a young professional at a Premiership club he'll already be a wealthy young man with at least one future contract assured in the professional ranks. Like all young players, becoming a regular at Everton is down to the managers judgement and grasping the opportunity when it arises.

He has already made it,if he stays clear of injury he will have a decent career as a footballer but it won't be with Everton or in the premier league.

From a few weeks ago ...

Everton Under-23s boss David Unsworth has heaped praise on fit-again defender Tyias Browning after he impressively came through his first 90 minutes since returning from a serious knee injury.

Browning spent almost an entire year on the sidelines before managing two run-outs of 45 minutes in the young Blues’ recent cup games against Norwich City and Blackpool.

However, on Sunday, the 22-year-old played the full game at centre-back as Unsworth’s side defeated Manchester City at Southport FC to overhaul their opponents at the top of the Premier League 2 table.

“I have to say a massive, massive credit goes to Tyias,” Unsworth told evertontv. “It was his first 90 minutes and he cruised through it and looked awesome at times with his recovery and his pace.

“It’s great to see that he’s not lost any of that electric pace and I’m very proud of him because it’s been a long time coming for him.

“He was a little bit tired in the dressing room after but so he should be the way he played.”

I think the January window will come too early for him, otherwise I reckon he'd go out on loan to get some competitive matches.
