I think the issue is with five at the back, the two holding midfielders need to be more creative and attack minded - something you can't describe either Barry or McCarthy as being. We're effectively playing with 7 at the back almost which limits the attacking options. Looking more solid at the back though so Koeman beginning to rub off on the team.

First few games of pre-season we looked quite dynamic.

As soon as Rom came back, we looked awful.

And I'm not blaming Rom - it's like you say, we have no idea what we're doing, and as such we're doing everything wrong - especially when it comes to using Lukaku properly.

Dynamism in the center of the park and we're a different team. Lukaku is the least of my concerns. He will slot plenty.

I have read most of the pages in this thread since the start of the game and the feeling universally seems to be that McCarthy is playing as a defensive midfielder and is rubbish.
We have not conceded in the first half...I am a little confused.
Are we incredibly lucky or what other reasons have we not conceded if we are so poor?

We are playing too deep and looks like a much better organised defence therefore we wouldn't be 6-0 down against Leicester.....0-0.

tounge in cheek really.. but against a pacier team we would be in trouble i think.

lets see how we get on this half. mhkitaryan might carve us apart here

Something we've done so rarely since he's been at Everton. You do have to wonder sometimes whether it's actually worth keeping him, simply cos in order to extract the best out of him (or something like the best) we'd need to vastly improve the other 10 players around him. But we cannot, and thus it reduces him to a recalcitrant passenger.

No indictment at all on Rom himself, merely how we operate as a team with him in it.

Certainly one of them does, or at least athletic enough to bridge the gap, Barry and McCarthy's strengths and weaknesses are basically the same.
