USA v Turkey

Is Torres a playmaker?

Yes, he looked like a little Arteta yesterday when he came on. He changed the game completely.

As for where Donovan will play, Bradley will want to play him on the right because of his experience against Ashley Cole.

-------------------Altidore-----------------
-----------------Donovan------------------
-Dempsey---Torres-----Bradley-----Holden--
-Bocanegra--Gooch----Demerit--Cherundolo-

grogtank: i think this would work best. because if we need more pace, slide donovan to the wing and insert findley. but this would open up a lot of options, with a solid midfield, speed up front, and stability in back. i like it

I like this too.. mine is similar.. Only thing is Donovan tends to not get involved in a CF/Attack Mid role.. He is much better on the wing.. Right side for that matter.

He was for Honduras. They rioted when he scored

I stand corrected.

TX Bill How do we get your boy Holden into the mix? We obviously need Torres, he not only distributed well but was surprisingly good on defense. Dempsey, Donovan and Bradley are fixed starters. Altidore is likely a fixed starter as well. I just can't work Holden into a lineup that maintains speed up top with Findley.

After the Turkey match this is our most likely starting XI. Is it reasonable for Holden to come off the bench?
------------Altidore----Findley------------
-Dempsey---Torres----Bradley---Donovan-
-Bocanegra--Gooch--Demerit--Cherundolo-

I want to see this in the friendly against Australia in SA. Donovan with complete freedom.
-------------Findley or Altidore-------------
-----------------Donovan------------------
-Dempsey---Torres-----Bradley-----Holden--
-Bocanegra--Gooch----Demerit--Cherundolo-

Would this be a problem match up on the right for Holden vs England? Would we be losing too much without Donovan on the wing? What about Holden's more central role with Bolton? I just want our best guys on the pitch!

I believe that Holden would serve the USA best by being an option off the bench. I know it's a cop out by saying it all depends on the situation but he brings a lot of different skills to the table so I think it depends on what we're facing.

Glad to be wrong about Findley, at least for one day.

Altidore was more influential playing deeper, instead of holding the ball up.

Torres was great. Will be tough to start him, but he's by far the best center mid with the ball at his feet.

Feilhaber on the left was puzzling, and he put in a performance to match it...

At least Bornstein is proving he's not international quality BEFORE the world cup.

Not really sure what the lineup will look like at this point. The second half was obviously much better, but there wasn't a change in formation, just in spacing and personnel. The wide players tucked in more, and it's really helped neutralize the counter attacks. I also think that Bradley has to go with experience in the back line at this point, it will be Cherundolo-Demerit-Onyewu-Bocanegra.

I would start Donovan-Bradley-Torres-Dempsey in the midfield. But I would understand if Edu gets the start, especially against England. And I would understand if Holden starts and pushes Dempsey up top, despite his performance. I didn't think Dempsey looked that bad up front, but the formation and spacing was just all wrong from the beginning, no one was going to be succesful playing like that.

He is makeing the decision easy for BB if you ask me.. Start him up!

I still think Dempsey is better in the Cahill position. I actually thought when Fulham signed him that they just got the next Cahill. Like Cahill he does alot of things all wrong but in the end you could always count on him to grab you that game winning goal. Plus they have both the same personality. Sometimes, like Cahill when you play him in the midfield you give up a little fluidity, passing and defense in exchange for goal scoring ability. Dempsey makes alot of mistakes in the midfield, mistakes that if you committ them up top you won't get punished for as badly. Plus with out current defensive situtaion we're going to get smoked if we make a mistake. So I would like to see him up front when Torres is playing. One of the main reasons why he was good in the midfield was not because of him but b/c the whole team stepped up not because he moved back.

Torres has to start the Aussie match. Bradley is forced to create in the middle with Edu/Clark next to him and Bradley is miles better playing without the ball an making timely smart runs.

Agree 100%

The coolest thing about him is he's so young and pretty new to the USA setup and he looks like the most confident and talented player in the midfield (although, I think Bradley is also a very good player - he's just not suited to directing the flow of the game the way Torres is).

Something I noticed and posted about on one of the Yank forums I frequent.

Pause it at 2:05. Note he looks to the right wing (Donovan). He then looks down takes a touch. Next he scans the midfield area before quickly firing off a pass to the wing. A sort of no look pass. He clearly didn't want Landon's marker to read what his intentions were.

Now pause it at 2:10. Note what he saw. Landon with one marker about 5 yards off. If Landon beats that marker it's a 3v3 with Donovan in a wide open space with the ball.

Now Bradley didn't know what Torres was doing and intercepted the pass but couldn't bring it under control from that range. So what does Torres do after Bradley breaks up his play? Makes another great tackle and pops the ball right to Bradley's feet, Bradley doesn't control it but great play from Torres.

Nice every touch on youtube from the match vs Turkey.

Whatcha think?

Looks nice and tidy, could be a good little player for USA. He has a bit of Leon Osman about his judging by those clips.

I've always been of the opinion that every team needs a creative type in the middle of the park, especially in tournament like the World cup, you need a bit of composure and patience in possession. I'd much rather see him in the middle than two defensive types.
