Neither am I with regards to the modern game, sadly.
I don't think we Evertonians have much of a case tbh. We've always bought the vast majority of our players throughput our existence. Yes we've brought some through, but we were called the Mersey millionaires in the 60s and prior to that we used to bring players down from Scotland or over from Ireland. Our main problem was not having money, and now spending it badly. I understand fans of club like West Ham or Southampton complaining about the modern game, because back in the day West Ham would have won the league with Cole,Lampard, Ferdinand etc and Southampton have brought a few players through who've left them. We lost Rooney, and that's about it.

Not quite, the 69-70 champions had Wright, Labone, Hurst, Harvey, Husband and Royle in the first choice team, plus Kenyon and Whittle as the players who came in for the injured Labone and Husband towards the end of the season.

A very significant part of our history, in which products of our youth system played a significant part ie most of the team came through the youth system.

In that it allows cash to be put in by industries connected to Uzmanov.
iirc Mosh has had his shareholding in USM holdings reduced to such a level that USM are not considered a Related Party anyway.
Biggest effect on us will be if the ‘market value’ criteria is less stringent (whatever that criteria is).
There’s also UEFAs view on these type of deals still to be considered, not that playing in Europe is much of a concern for us at present.

Fair enough. I'm too young to remember that team. I started going in 1974.

They wont want to aggravate the clubs who threatened a breakaway. The rest of us will benefit through that.

Fair market value is where it gets interesting, but I cant see the PL in a Covid hit football industry haggling over definitions too much, as long as it's not taking the piss.

Yeah I get that. But the difference in wealth now seems an order of magnitude different - and its no longer about steady building off success and more of a lottery as to which sugar daddy you get on a whim. Its nothing to do with the pitch anymore.

That does sound significant for us.

Interesting. I think in the top club’s scramble to stop Newcastle coming in with sponsorship deals worth 100s of millions they might actually have opened the door to someone like Usmanov putting a lot of money into us through various means as it could be argued to be fair market value.

We’re coming from such a low baseline. For example if we could argue that we had a short sponsor deal from an Usmanov company that was the 7th highest in the PL, that would still be massively higher than what we have now, and how could anyone claim it’s not fair value?

Couldn’t Usmanov have already done this over recent seasons if he wanted to though??
