Maybe he borrow LBJ's and be the Phantom of Manaus!

This is the first thing that came to mind following Dempsey's post game interview. This look will make Ronaldo piss his trousers during the Portuguese National Anthem.

Imagine Laimbeer as a striker. The gut-wrenching fear of how he could dive in the box would be worth 15 goals a year.

Every time I hear people sneer at footy because of the diving, I just respond with two words. Bill Laimbeer.

Thoughts on formation for Sunday? I think Klinsmann will be forced to do something drastic, there's certainly no like for like Altidore sub. Perhaps Dempsey moves up top but I don't think that's a good idea?

Johnson-Cameron-Besler-Beasley
Beckerman
Zusi-Bradley-Jones
Johannsson
Dempsey

Leaving Johnson and/or Boyd seems to have been a bad move. Could see a guy like Diskerud if they go to a 5 man midfield. Could also see a back three, though I think that would be disastrous, we don't have enough mobility in the back to do that.

I think is what I'd go with. With Pepe out, it might be a little easier for Clint to play lone striker, thankfully.

This is a bit of "playing for a draw" yes, but I think it's our best hope of pressuring the other 10 Portuguese players so much that Ronaldo is on an island. Which is basically what Germany did to them.

I like Eddie Johnson, but he's one of those guys that when his form falters he has trouble getting out of the funk... And with 1 goal and 1 assist for DC United in 12 games, yeah, he's in a funk.

We just don't have a lot of quality target forwards, maybe it's something about MLS play that just doesn't produce them. Not exactly a league known for its top notch defenders.

Our best hope to replace Altidore right now would be NASA building a reverse-aging machine and throwing McBride in it.

Is Besler cleared to play?

Klinsmann: Matt Besler “all fine” for Sunday against Portugal; John Brooks back to bench
Richard Farley Jun 17, 2014, 9:36 PM EDT

Two down, one to go, according to Jurgen Klinsmann. Speaking at a Tuesday press conference, the United States Men’s National Team head coach said two of the three stars that were injured in Monday’s 2-1 win over Ghana will be ready to go on Sunday, with doubts surrounding defender Matt Besler alleviated after the Sporting Kansas City all-star was given the all clear.

According to Klinsmann, Dempsey’s broken nose, suffered the the first half, will not sideline him for the U.S.’s next match, against Portugal. Striker Jozy Altidore is still uncertain after a 21st minute hamstring injury forced his removal.

Matt Besler is in the Dempsey camp. Though he was replaced at halftime against Ghana by John Brooks, the 27-year-old’s own hamstring problem does not approach the severity of Altidore’s. According to his head coach, Besler will play on Sunday in Manaus, pushing Brooks back to his spot on the bench.

“Matt is no problem,” Klinsmann said, augmenting this statement before moving on to the next topic. “[He'll be] all fine for the next game.”

For U.S. fans, the news is cause for relief. Though Brooks eventually produced the game-winning goal, he was also slow to fill the space in defense during André Ayew’s late equalizer. Even before that 82nd minute score, the back line had looked less confident after Besler’s substitution, with the Black Stars finally able to consistently connect with Gyan once the team’s starting left-center back was removed.

Whether those connections were caused by Ghana’s improvement or Besler’s absence, there is a coincidence, one the U.S. need not investigate further. Going into a match that could secure its place in the knockout round, the States’ back four will be in tact.

Brooks may prove good enough to fill Besler’s shoes. Fortunately for U.S. fans, they don’t have to find out so soon.

I want to see the Mix in, see what he can do to set his teammates up.

I'd love to get a win against Portugal and do some nutjob 3-5-2 formation against Germany. Mix joining the midfield and Wondo up top with Dempsey.

Why not? In that scenario we'll have nothing to lose. May as well take a crack at outmuscling the German midfield just for the fun of it. Just squeeze it to the final third, cross it in front of the goal, have Dempsey pull defenders, and watch Wondo's ungraceful fish-like jumps to knock them in.

Not at all sure what we'll see Sunday. I'm not confident that Beasley will start--we could see Johnson moving to LB and... well, Yedlin at RB? Have no idea really. I don't think JK will switch from the diamond, but Dempsey makes sense as lone striker. Probably Johannson again if using 2 ST.
