VAR -Gordon's goal v Palace

It's tight but he was offside. It's not a terrible decision just because it harms us.

It would have been a terrible decision whoever it went against. It's so incredibly tight that the notion of "clear and obvious" or "give the benefit of the doubt to the attacker" goes completely out of the window. I can't remember who the other team was but they had a very similar tight call go against them that weekend, but around the same time, Man U got arguably a "more offside" call go their way against Liverpool. Hence fans of many non-top 6 clubs feeling like it's one set of rules for them and another for said top 6.

I don't mind it being offside if it's consistently applied in the same way to all clubs, but the consistency has been the biggest issue.

Clear and obvious doesn't apply to offside and benefit to the attackers isn't a real thing that referees actually do.

Plus you can't even blame VAR, the referee called him offside! If VAR goes away guess what happens? He's still offside!

Okay if clear and obvious doesn't apply to offside and it's either you're on or you're off, cool, but please compare Gray's disallowed against Leeds vs. Rashford's allowed vs Liverpool and tell me that it's consistent. Consistency, as I say, is the main issue.

With regards to your point about the linesman being the one who made the mistake, I agree, but I think this comes back to the OP's main point. Anyone could look at that and know it was onside in 10 seconds, so it taking so long implies they thoroughly reviewed the entire sequence. Now, are they are doing that for every goal irrespective of what the ref / linesman's call is? If so, then I guess you'd have to say fair enough, I don't quite like the idea of them going over everything with a fine-tooth comb but if it's consistently applied to every goal then at least it's the same for everyone.

That said, for most goals the subsequent restart is not delayed by anywhere near as much... implying to me that they only thoroughly reviewed the entire sequence because the linesman raised his flag. If that's the case then decisions are unfairly scrutinised more as a result of ref / linesman making an initial mistake.

Actually clear and obvious does apply to offsides, just they choose not to apply it to offsides.

Which personally i think is the right way of doing it, if you're offside you're offside. Otherwise it just shows clear obvious up for the bollocks that it is when 1 week a VAR ref will give an offside for a player being 1 inch off, the next week a different VAR ref will give onside when a player is 2 inches off.

Where does the photo show that ?

He was well offside, mate :p

Yea I didn't celebrate as I was fuming about the VAR time and I am still fuming at the goal that VAR didn't rule out
