Keane has been getting a lot of stick, rightly so. But Holgate has been absolutely abysmal. Look at this image in the build up to their second goal.
Keane has let Kane get the wrong side of him, fair enough, it happens. It shouldn't, especially seeing as though Kane is Hardly rapid. But wtf is Holgate doing? He can see Kenny has got Son covered, so how in gods name is Holgate not getting across to cover from that position? Shocking. It's not like Kane can out run him. View attachment 158517
Holgate isn’t a premier league starter for any club, he’s not developed at all. Absolutely terrifying the prospect of him and Godfrey playing together.

That cash spent in January was flushed down the toilet in terms of the purposes we need to spend it for: good to go FBs who could hand us expereince and good performances to get us out of this hole.

We needed to face up to the fact - regardless of an injury to Mina - that we have no centre backs at this club....NONE.

It was a catastrophic lack of steweradship that we went through January and spent £30M and no CB was brought in.

IMO we needed to buy two. What we have are lower level Championship players.

The way Godfrey has been indulged is a case in point. That lad is not a footballer. He's just not. And he's had loads of game time and hasn't been involved lately only because he's been injured.

I think this CB situation will be the greatest single factor that will relegate us.
The money was inevitably flushed down the toilet because they hadn’t been planning to replace the left back position, until the fat one came in it was one of the few positions that was up to standard. Rash decisions without any long term thought or strategy have been the hallmark of Moshiri’s tenure, we haven’t learned anything. They tend not to work out very well.

Re Godfrey, couldn’t agree more. People expecting him to come back and shore up this leaky defence have got short memories. He’s not a premier league centre back at the moment, he’s so weak in the air, positionally naive, can you imagine him and Holgate together…nightmare stuff. Might be though with Mina out and Keane looking fried.

They were all shocking

The second goal is appalling

Kane goes past allan who is flat footed and lacks any athleticism

Then Kenny who has a runner on his left and right, decides to dive directly at the ball, why? Kane just passes it with ease past him

Then Keane goes with his runner away from goal and the player just goes towards goal - shocking

Holgate then jumps at the ball despite the player actually going no where if he just holds position

Poor save from Pickford, but that can happen so not being too critical of that.

Its like one slight error cannot be rectified, they hit panic self destruct and its a chain of calamities

Holgate has had a few games at RB years ago that were ok. I never ever thought he was a CB. It says it all about what this club has become that we haven't had a leader in defence since Jagielka...and he led through example rather than organisation.

Anyone can get a game at CB at this club now. It's almost seen as a job that doesn't require specialists. It's key to understanding why we're in the mess we are.

Godfrey is an athlete, that's it. No technical ability whatsoever. His arl feller was a rugby league player and I think he should have joined him there.

Rather have Brandthwaite in than Godfrey.

We must have the weakest central defensive options in the PL. That will take us down in the end.

I still cant believe January came and went and they kept faith in those sub-average CBs at the club.

That will be the costliest error in Everton's history.

If we'd just got one good CB in January we'd be heading toward mid-table right now. Benitez is responsible for that and also Lampard.

FFS, Delli Alli.

Imagine pointing out Holgates position when Keane is 5ft behind his man.

This is all on that donkey Keane mate.

Keane is at fault no doubt, but the situation was still manageable. Holgate should know his partner has got himself the wrong side of his man. Holgate is in a position to rescue that situation and he doesn't.

I'm not picking a side here. Kesne looks finished at this level. They both need booting.

I think you’re right. Without Mina and Keane it’s not an option to play Holgate and Godfrey together at centre back - Branthwaite probably has to play for one of them.

You can’t play two centre backs who’re as poor in the air as those two together, an absolute liability in this league. Too many distracted by Hollywood tackles and runs forward from Godfrey and overlook he’s not got the basics of a centre back. Holgate, well… That said Branthwaite with either one of them doesn’t inspire confidence.

It’s championship level however you look at it. Needs a much better shape and protection from the midfield than we had against Southampton and Spurs for starters!

It needed to be corrected in January. It wasn't and we're paying for it.

In the summer it'll be the priority. Let's hope it's still PL CBs we're looking for.

It’s possible they thought Mina coming back would be enough to limp through to the summer. Which given his injury record was a spectacular gamble…

This guy. He's 22. Kyiv was his only club before he came to us. He joins a back four devoid of confidence and a team who are in a relegation battle. Now his whole life is in turmoil because of the war. Are we asking too much of him ? He could yet be good for us, but at the moment his crossing is below average, and I always feel that he has a defensive mistake in him. We desperately need him to shine over the next few weeks, because it's a problem position for us, and the alternatives are Kenny (who's clearly better playing on the right), and Godfrey - and if Godfrey plays LB then it's back to the dreaded Keane - Holgate partnership.
