…ffs, Zat, I don’t keep a record of players who’ve gone past him but there’s plenty. When he arrived he often stood face on to his opponent and rooted to the ground. As a result, he usually dangled out a leg and brought the player down. I think he’s been steady since those first few months, but that’s what he is - steady.

i watched Sessignon for Spurs yesterday, he offered so much at both ends of the pitch. We don’t get that. I like Mykolenko lots & he’s definitely improved but I’m not convinced by his quality at either end of the pitch, he’s just ok.

So when he arrived he took some time to adapt?

Since then not a single player has gotten the better of him more than perhaps once a match.

I'd suggest that hes been outstanding.

He scored our best goal last season.

He put the ball in for the first goal in our 3-2 win over Palace last year.

He denied mighty Salah a kick in the game until 85 mins.

He's 23.

He does need to improve a lot if he want's to be where we want to go, but so does Patterson (who has done less for the team in the same time), so does Gordon, so does Godfrey, and most of the players who are 23 and under (I'd also include Onana in this but he's been here 2 mins & I have zero doubt he will be one of the best 3 players by the start of next season)

I don't think this is about Digne, or Mykolenko for that matter. It's about Benitez
It 100% is, Myko along with Gray and Pattersen were all bought on his watch, and people will always look at them as a Benitez player, no matter how they play.
Same deal with lucas, if Frank would of got him off the wage will he would get a pass for it.
Everton should always come first, not likes and dislikes of certain individuals who pass though.

You are one of the worst ones for it though. Your dislike of Digne, in my opinion, is borne out of support for Benitez. He fell out with Benitez, which is the only reason the club sold him. It wasn't a footballing decision.

With hindsight it may have been a good decision because his sale financed the purchase of Myko and Patts. But it was a good decision made for the wrong reasons. Both the new players were gambles in so far as they were young and untested, whereas Digne was one of the leagues best left backs. Myko is better defensively but isn't half the player going the other way. But he is still young and will hopefully develop that side of his game. Patterson is the clincher though. He looks the real deal.

Ideally we would still have all 3 players, but I don't expect you to agree with me as your opinion of Digne is blinded by your loyalty to Benitez.

But Lucas was rubbish for 12 months before Rafael arrived, so again your talking rubbish.
People also foolishly made the same mistake with James, another down tools waste of space who bailed at the end of the previous manager, but people blamed it on Rafael, it was pathetic.

Anyway, Myko is a good player, maybe the system isn't suiting him, I dunno, but I do know we have the best back line we've had for years.

Digne wasn't rubbish for 12 months prior to his sale and you actually saying that merely confirms my post. You are so blindly protective of everything Benitez it's become a standing joke on here mate.

As regards Myko, playing a back 4 suits him, especially compared to a wing back role in a back 3/5. Defensively, this probably is our best back 4 for years, but that isn't just down to the individuals involved. The whole team defends better and a lot if credit also has to go to our new dynamic midfield and the most in form keeper in the league.

Crazy the standards this lad is judged to. Defensively he’s been absolutely outstanding. I think I’ve only seen him beaten once one on one (and that was very recently), he stops crosses, he gets in front of shots, he’s positionally excellent on the back post for crosses. He keeps the ball well, he gets forward and has a goal threat.

It feels as though unless he’s a combination of Ashley Cole and Baines at their peak then he’s somehow only average. That’s a crazy bar to set for any player. For every single full back if they tilt their balance of play more towards defence or attack the other suffers. There’s hardly any that have got both down perfectly.

Even Ashley Cole in his absolute prime wasn’t a very good crosser of the ball. He was seen as the best in the world though because no one beat him one on one. A full backs primary job is to defend. Give me Mykolenko shutting Salah out of a game any day than Digne being done five or six times a game but putting in a few decent crosses also.

An absolutely excellent player for us and a brilliant signing. A key component of the best defence in the league currently. He’s just taken for granted too often.

No clearer example of this than the Leicester away game, we’d been rock solid absorbing their pressure holding onto our lead, then Mykolenko goes off and Kenny comes on, within a minute he’s allowed a cross in and Barnes has a free header he should score from. That goes in and we’re maybe not playing PL football now.

We’ve had a massive fullback problem for years with Digne miles out of position, the rest of the back 4 gets pulled across and Keane or Coleman get isolated and embarrassed one on one. Mykolenko has solved all of that. He’s sat in next to them and the entire back 4 is just closing down space and staying compact. Because the RB is being pulled all over the shop now they can concentrate on stopping crosses on their flank as well. The CBs have less crosses to deal with so can keep better positions. It’s a virtuous circle.

Brilliant player, if he’s ever out the team we’ll notice it I guarantee you.

Yeah I actually said that in my post I think. And it's why I said ideally. I like both full backs as they bring different qualities.

The point I was originally making is that some fans opinions on both players is affected by their stance on Benitez.

yeah I agree.

Personally I think Benitez was a large factor in Digne turning rancid, because of the different role/tactics.

Came to the right decision for the wrong reasons, which I think you said prior to, and I totally agree... a happy outcome for an ugly conclusion to Digne's time here.

Good point, one funded 2, and that one has done nothing elsewhere, it was great business, Pattersen when fit is a star player for us.
which is strange because if Benitez was here he would have ruined Patterson IMO because he doesn't like his full backs to do what Nathan naturally wants to do (i.e. not sit in)
