I thought Valente was quite good after that initial month or so, and Pistone will always have the 2004/05 season.Worst lb I’ve seen for Everton.
Worse than Naysmith, Valente, Pistone.
Abysmal.

He was an integral large part of the 4th best defence last season, definitely limited going forward, and could be improved, but he's where we are as a club.I'm glad this thread is never full of over the top statements, that'd be dead weird.
Wasn't Valente always injured?I thought Valente was quite good after that initial month or so, and Pistone will always have the 2004/05 season.
I didn't think so, but I'm not sure now that you've said it.Wasn't Valente always injured?
I'll have a google tomorrow mate. I had a ST back then and recall him looking decent, but never playing.I didn't think so, but I'm not sure now that you've said it.
It's all a blur, really.
I should have just stuck to supporting Hulk Hogan. He always won in the end.
Maybe he did only start regularly in his first season.I'll have a google tomorrow mate. I had a ST back then and recall him looking decent, but never playing.

Interesting. He played 45 times in a 4 year spell, I can't ever remember him being first choice like.Maybe he did only start regularly in his first season.
It must have been Lescott at left-back in 2006/07, as I'm pretty sure it was Stubbs and Yobo in the centre.
The way the team sets up doesn't really lend itself to him being targeted because we play a very compact system where a lot of protection is given to him. He really is bad though, he always has been.He was an integral large part of the 4th best defence last season, definitely limited going forward, and could be improved, but he's where we are as a club.
I think our support base goes just a little ott? If he was that bad, he'd be targeted and getting rinsed down his flank every single week, and whilst he's defo no great shakes like, he simply isn't.
Agree in part. To me, he does a reasonable, albeit limited, job in our particular system. However, and to repeat the point, if he was that bad, he would be getting singled out by the opposition each and every week and we would constantly be conceding goals and chances from down his flank, and generally speaking, we don't. I would like to think a new manager, with a bit of dough, will have him as second choice left back in a season or two.The way the team sets up doesn't really lend itself to him being targeted because we play a very compact system where a lot of protection is given to him. I suppose it depends what you mean by that bad really. I mean he's a professional footballer at the highest level not a lad we've pulled out of the crowd, he's obviously got a basic level of competence. Relative to others in his position in the league I would say he very much is that bad, but he's not going to comically have rings run around him by every opponent because that's not how it works.Agree in part. How it works is when someone in the opposition defence is weak, all teams target them, week in week out. He doesn't get targeted in that way. How he compares to other LB's, who knows or cares? They don't play for us so it's not exactly a fair comparison.I suppose it depends what you mean by that bad really. I don't know what seems madder: Valente still being here in 2009 or Naysmith in 2007.Interesting. He played 45 times in a 4 year spell, I can't ever remember him being first choice like.

I'd say it's similar to how Keane has previously been protected by defensive systems that allow him to never step out of a deep line. How it works is when someone in the opposition defence is weak, all teams target them, week in week out. He's probably the weakest LB we've had for many years, and when/if we have a more expansive style, he'll need to improve aspects of his game or he'll be gone. However as per my previous post, he's where we are at currently. We have far, far bigger problems up the other end of the pitch, imo like.
