I suspect Benitez is thinking he can coach the necessary positioning/recovery into him, given the speed differential.
A lot of what has appeared to be going on suddenly makes sense. This has to be perceived as something of a betrayal by some senior playing staff. Benitez is the sort of manager who's not afraid to send the message that there are no names guaranteed to remain at the club, much less the team sheet. Big clubs have been making inquiries and it's January, which means it's optimal cash-in time, though I suspect Juve is just looking for a solution on the cheap.
