Walter Smith

One of the nicest football people I have ever had the good fortune to meet.

Absolutely top class, who initially brought a few bright sparks to the club and maintaining his dignity at Everton at a tough time.

Was a little unlucky as he signed some great players. Matterazzi, Dacourt, the vanishing Matteo Ferrari (I'm sure he must have had a game trigger buy clause and we were skint). Some other signings were less than spectacular, it happens. He always carried himself incredibly well when facing a hostile press.

It should also be remembered that despite being fired a couple of days earlier it was Smith that called Kenwright and basically told him to give his head a wobble over appointing Gary Megson (an ex Blue, what a shock) as his replacement. It was Smith who said go after Moyes, saved BK's bacon. The luckiest man in football.

RIP Mr. Smith.

Walter Smith wasn't a great Everton manager but far more importantly he was a great man.

He managed at a very difficult , turbulent period in Everton's history and brought a much needed quiet dignity and gravitas to the club.

Thank you for your service to football.

My condolences go to family and friends.

RIP.
