It's either realpolitik, or toadying. Unfortunately, we're a middle ranked power, now without the support of the EU, not sure what else he could. Principles versus economics - principles very rarely the winner.

This is true. But it still reflects badly on the UK - who chose to be a middle-ranked power detached from the much stronger EU collective. Starmer's toadying is a consequence of this self-inflicted weakness.

Mind you, we await the EU response. I suspect the scales fell from a lot of eyes today and when the tarriffs come the response will be swift. The "instrument" or big bazooka is ready, apparently. Not before time. If there is one war the EU is actually capable of waging right now, it's a trade war. That's not to say for a moment that it will be a good thing - but it is to say that if attacked, the EU can strike back just as hard. Bullies only tend to learn from being struck back at...
