They may have discovered it but nobody in Canada is speaking Norwegian or worshipping pagan deities. Columbus was the beginning of Europeans taking over the continent.

He was funded by the Spanish, hence Spanish being the language that eventually came to dominate South and Central America along with some of the Caribbean islands.

And to be pedantic Italian wasn’t really a language in and of itself until after unification in the 19th century - he would probably have spoken Ligurian which isn’t exactly the same.

And that domination is something to celebrate? (Which was the original point). Must have been pretty rough on the people whose home it was.

And to be equally pedantic, not sure those Vikings would have spoken Norwegian either ?

To be fair, it's really no skin off my nose if they celebrate Columbus or not so we'll not fall out over it.

Oh I absolutely agree mate. Just meant that he’s been the individual who’s celebrated because he was the one who kicked it all off.
