For me the reasoning we shouldn’t be celebrating Columbus is precisely because he was the beginning of a period of devastation for the indigenous population that were already living here. Europeans indeed propagated their language, their culture and Christianity but along with it came disease, slaughter, forceful land taking and the destruction of ancient societies. People in America have romanticize Columbus story and legacy but there is historical evidence that his conquest was grim and gruesome thus shouldn’t be celebrated. They may have discovered it but nobody in Canada is speaking Norwegian or worshipping pagan deities. Columbus was the beginning of Europeans taking over the continent.
Especially as most Vikings were Danish.(apparently).And that domination is something to celebrate? (Which was the original point). Must have been pretty rough on the people whose home it was.
And to be equally pedantic, not sure those Vikings would have spoken Norwegian either ?
To be fair, it's really no skin off my nose if they celebrate Columbus or not so we'll not fall out over it.
Canadians do like bacon, to be fair!Especially as most Vikings were Danish.(apparently).
So true! When will pillow manufacturers realise that the ideal number of pillows is one and a half?
