Warning Signs

Player Valuation: £35m
I'm getting more and more worried about this next qualifying fixture. It's the most important game of the season as far as I'm concerned - as lose it and we can forget about europe.

The warning signs: a fairly promising start to the season has tailed off with some bad performances - reading, blackburn, bolton (yes we won, but can play better than that surely, man united.)

each game has highlighted some old everton problems and some new ones. Our inability to keep possession, distribute from the back without resorting to the big hoof, keep the ball on the ground and not indulge in endless head tennis, failing to control the tempo of a match and playing with too much seperation from the midfielders and the strikers.

We've also failed to keep a clean sheet and been a little rusty at basic things like set pieces.

The fernandes betrayl hurt the club seriously as going into this campaign, a large part of the above problems should have been solved by his quality and creativity in midfield, and players like jags and baines at fullback distributing the ball well.

Instead Hibbert has played at RB, with his panic ball style of distribution, and we've had to rely on the solid defensive, non nonsense tackling styles (and creativity lite styles) of Neville and Carsley (or jags) in midfield. Gravesen can help with this problem, but not if he fails to make the team due to injury. So how will we keep possession against a side that will be playing like possessed maniacs in order to get into europe?

Just as worryingly, Arteta has been off colour in the last three or four games (after the first couple when he was on fire), and with such a burden of creativity and service on his shoulders we cannot afford for him to have an off day. even his corners and free kicks seem to have deserted him.

Add to tht and we have a complete unknown in goal - presuming that 'nuclear' starts; whether he steps up or bottles it is anyone's guess.

Celtic went to the ukranian side (the side that finished above Metalist in the league in 2nd place) Shakhtar Donestk and lost 2-0 yesterday. We cannot expect much when we go over there. We need to beat them convincingly now.

I'm worrying that we have alot to get right in time for this match, and I'm concerned, especially in midfield.

Thoughts, gentleman?

I,m quite happy with the start we have made in my eyes we have the best attack and defence since the mid eighties,i do worry about the midfield though and your right about ball possession we are not good at keeping it i also think we don,t have enough pace and skill in the middle but rome wasn,t built in a day and moysie is building it slowly but surely.
I think we will be better when tommy gets fit and i reckon we will beat this team from ukraine quite easily we will learn from last time so get the atlas out lads we are going on a journey

I agree that we havn't hit top form yet, but we're still in 6th place so that shows that we have been getting results even when not on form. Hopefully Arteta will be back on form for this match and European games may suit Pienaar and Osman more than the Premiership.

It's by no means a foregone conclusion but we can take some confidence into the match I think.

Little England how I love you...

* Bundesliga Champion: 2000, 2001, 2003
* DFB Pokal Winner: 2000, 2003
* Champions League Winner: 2001
* Intercontinental Cup Winner: 2001
* 2. Bundesliga Champion: 2005
* UEFA Under-18 Championship: Runner-up 1997
* European Super Cup: Runner-up: 2001

Given that he was unable to dislodge Ollie Kahn (German national keeper and one of Europe's best in his prime) in one of the world's top teams and was only just beaten out by Colombian national keeper Mondragon at the start of this season, I suspect that if there are worries about people "bottling it" it may be better to look elsewhere in the team where there is more "previous"...;)

Stats amount to nothing IMO. He did however look secure and not at all out of place against the Mancs.

Well, I agree with you entirely there. I was just commenting on the concept of him being an "unknown" who had the potential for crapping himself when it came to a European match. In fact, he is a keeper with a good reputation and long service with one of the most professional outfits in the world who was trusted to play the same role for them in the Champions League.

I agree that "the English(no offense:) )" have a tendency to look at players as being unknown if they are not known in the UK.

Maybe i'm a hopeless optimist but i'm more encouraged than worried.

Wessels looks great on paper and the biggest plus for me was how calm our defence looked with him behind them on Sat. They've seen more of him than us so thats gotta be a positive.

Our defence has been a bit shaky but I thought they've looked generally solid - save for split second lapses of concentration which seem to be getting fewer and further between. They put in a good shift against Man U. I hope Phil goes to right back.

Midfield - we're stuck with what we've got at least till Jan thanks to Fernandes' skulduggery. However we've got Baines doing his best to help them out and although there's still lots of long ball, (which by the way Yakubu seems pretty good at holding up) i've also seen some quite intricate work at times. Hopefully Arteta can sparkle again, and Gravesen can continue to make an impact!

Scoring-wise we've actually got a few from around the team - Lescott, Osman, Mcfadden, Anichebe, Yakubu - good stuff considering we couldn't buy a goal a few years ago. Vaughany and Cahill still to return..

Finally, in pre-season we bossed Werder Bremen and I agree with Bruces' post above - with more time on the ball our midfielders played some tasty stuff. Their defence was cacking itself every time we moved it forward.

COYB just hope I haven't given it the kiss of death

About Yak holding the ball up well. You see him against Man U shield the ball from Rio, then turn and skip past him. 'Twas great :D

Yes enjoyed seeing Rio turned over almost as much as Bainsey making Ronaldo look like the show pony that he is.

Yak did it a few times - one of them being that weird foul that Man U won. Also a few nifty touches to support with back to goal. Good signs

how about playing this;

Neville - Yobo - stubbs - Lescott
- -Cars- -
Arteta - Osman - Baines-
- - AJ- -Yak-

I think Baines looks good going forward and has pace to trouble people. Lescott we know is solid at left back and stubbs will provide a wise head at the back.

Osmans lack of pace wont show up to badly in the middle and he can pass the ball and score too.

what ya reckon?

It also gets all of Moyes' favourites in the squad.

Thats a great looking squad, probably how we should start playing in the premiership.

people who look stuff up on google to appear like they're knowledgable, how I love you...

I merely meant Wessels is an unknown as far as Everton are concerned. Did he win any of that stuff playing in goal for everton? thought not.

Was he the first choice goal keeper when Bayeurn won all those titles? thought not.

I am well aware of who he is, and that he has a pedigree. You insult my intelligence to suggest otherwise.

Doesn't mean he's going to transfer and be an instant success. I hope he does.

little england, I [Poor language removed]' ask ya...

Richard Wright.

Premiership title 2001-2002

FA cup winner 2001 - 2002

experience playing in the champions league.

playing a handful of games as reserve keeper does not mean you can stand up and say you are one of the world's best keepers and point at the silverware; when you were polishing the mahogany.

may prove to be a great keeper for everton, but for now he is an unknown quantity.

Completely agree, although Richard Wright as good for us the first couple of seasons. I still rate Wessels over him though the defence seemed just as assured by his presence as they where over Howard.

I think based on that one performance that he'll be a decent deputy too Howard.
