I'd say no, based on the fact they were in the hunt for fourth place right up until the end.

The years when Everton struggled early and then made a late surge to finish ten points behind Arsenal or Liverpool felt a lot more like midtable obscurity.

Could define midtable either

mathematically - 10th/11th place plus or minus a couple of places.

By performance - those teams towards the end of the season who are neither in the battle for relegation nor in the competition for Champions league / Europa league spots.

5th isn't midtable using either definition.

Don't bring a sensible post into today's threads LL, today's about reaction and fume....

What's with all the doubt and uncertainty, and the inability to agree on a definition of what constitutes mid-table? I thought the Key Stage 3 mathematics had it all sorted?

Traditionally speaking, 5th place was mid-table, and you will continue hearing people describe it as such. I am a traditionalist, and therefore I continue to consider it a mid-table position.

Traditionally, a 5th place finish would leave you three places places below the team that qualified for the UEFA Cup. But in the Sky-Boy era, you can have teams finishing 7th and even 8th qualifying for Europe. Maybe things are changing, but traditionally, 5th place was mid-table, and it still is for many people.

If you work on tv,or are a football expert,or some oppo fans, then yes 5th,6th,7th is mid table lol when you mention the name Everton

What have the Euro places got to do with defining mid table in a 20 team table mate ?

Obviously I'm in the minority so not much else I can say about this topic.

5th thru 17th medal.

If you read the thread, you will see people classing competing for the European qualification places as being an indicator of not being in a mid-table position.

The results of the poll respectfully disagree.

By the looks of things less than 10% do...because it's wrong.

10% on here. Would be interesting to see the results if such a poll was posted elsewhere. And as you said previously, lots of people can be wrong, including the 90% you refer to.

But the differing opinions as to what exactly does constitute mid-table on here, indicates that it's a question that isn't governed by GCSE mathematics, and that a person's individual perspective is playing a part
