10% on here. Would be interesting to see the results if such a poll was posted elsewhere. And as you said previously, lots of people can be wrong, including the 90% you refer to.

But the differing opinions as to what exactly does constitute mid-table on here, indicates that it's a question that isn't governed by GCSE mathematics, and that a person's individual perspective is playing a part

I acknowledged differences in perspective ages ago, it was the Sky-Boy Massive who were trying to argue that it was governed by mathematics.

So minority means wrong?

No, but if you ask most people what the splits are in the table you'd mostly get :-

  • In with a decent shout of a CL finish
  • In danger of relegation
  • In with a shout of getting a Europa league finish and
  • Mid table mediocrity
So mid-table mediocrity will change from season to season, depending on how tight it is at the bottom and the top. Very few right-minded people over here would class 5th as mid-table. Might be different in the States though mate, I don't know enough about the leagues in your neck of the woods to say whether you can compare the situations or not.

That's not having a go at you by the way, just trying to put it in context.

Jesus @Woolly Blue. it's not enough that we're feeling the pain now, you have to travel back in time and destroy last year's happiness.

Haha, leave me alone you monster ! I only started the thread to stop another one getting hijacked ffs !

No, 5th position was a great position to finish in, I just want Everton to get back to playing to the level of football that helped achieve that position because collectively and in loads of cases individually we've seldom seen it this season.

I normally hate international breaks, kind of pleased with this ones timing, pissed off with Everton atm, hopefully the break does us good too.

What's with all the doubt and uncertainty, and the inability to agree on a definition of what constitutes mid-table? I thought the Key Stage 3 mathematics had it all sorted?

Traditionally speaking, 5th place was mid-table, and you will continue hearing people describe it as such. I am a traditionalist, and therefore I continue to consider it a mid-table position.

Traditionally, a 5th place finish would leave you three places places below the team that qualified for the UEFA Cup. But in the Sky-Boy era, you can have teams finishing 7th and even 8th qualifying for Europe. Maybe things are changing, but traditionally, 5th place was mid-table, and it still is for many people.

Dymak this crap up as you go along?

It saddens me that there are people out there that believe 5th is mid-table.

They only do so in order to put Everton down.

You get rewarded for finishing 5th with a European place.

Something that carries a reward by definition is to mark an achievement. It is not an indicator of mediocrity or of being mid-table.

Some people are just dumb & ignorant, whilst others are just trolling for the sake of it.

'Traditionally' it was 2 points for a win, there was no back pass rule, and every game kicked off at 3pm on Saturday.

You cannot judge modern football in 2014 based on the 'traditional', or rather 'no longer in existance' rules of 30-40 years ago.

Otherwise you just look very silly.

8th to 13th I'd say.

1st to 7th is top ( maybe 1st to 6th, which would make 7th mid-table)

14th to 20th is bottom, which always makes me think of Rik Mayall. RIP Rik.

so 7th to 13th... or maybe 14th is now mid table...not much of a stretch from 5th... weren't we nearer to 7th points wise (6 pts.?) than we were to 4th (7pts.?)

Yep 5th IS mid table, with the Europa white elephant / millstone round your neck thrown in for good measure.
