Liverpool Football Derby 1928

These newsreel cuts are believed to have been shot at the Liverpool-Everton match at Goodison on 29 September 1928. The brief segments of the match are out of sequence, but include some close shots of the players. The most curious fragment is of the legendary Dixie Dean having a kickabout, apparently in cricket nets, with a crowd of fans looking on. Thanks to the observant readership of the Liverpool Echo, two of the men amongst the group with Dixie Dean have been identified. They are boxing stars Nel Tarleton (like Dean, in a waistcoat) and Dom Volante (in the cricket jumper).

Birkenhead-born centre forward William 'Dixie' Dean (1907-1980) played for Everton from 1925 until 1938. In the 1927-28 season he scored a phenomenal 60 league goals in 39 appearances for the club - setting a record still unbeaten in the English league.

A footnote: Nel Tarleton, the Lonsdale Belt winner my Grandad followed all over the place, subsequently married William Ralph's ex-fiance. I'm assuming there was only one, though this may be unwise.

1926-1927

Division 1
12 March 1927
Everton 2-1 Leeds Utd
(Dean, Weldon)
Topical Budget Newsreel, B&W, 55 seconds

Goodison Park, March 1927. Everton and Leeds United were on equal points at 2nd and 3rd from the bottom of Division One. This was a crucial match, with both teams hoping to avoid the drop. The camera picks up most of the action from midway along the sideline, with several shots of Leeds (in stripes) attacking the Everton goal. The final score was 2-1 to Everton with Dixie Dean among the scorers.

A single game from the championship winning season of 1927-28, the year of Dixie's 60.

The official attendance for this derby was 65,729. Looking at the footage, you could be forgiven for thinking there were many more.

Battle for Wembley 1928

Arsenal, not yet wearing their familiar red-top-with-white-sleeves combination, eventually won this thrilling cup tie against Everton 4-3, ample reward for the huge crowds that mass on terraces and in stands to watch the game. The shots of the crowd are wonderful and while action on the pitch is less discernible, the camera does capture a goal, to the delight of the heaving terrace behind the goal.
