Watches

I like the look of watches but no way I'd throw money at them. 3k for a watch isnt worth two months solid pay - or even a day's. I have a Cabot army watch that is both aesthetically pleasing, robust and accurate ta.

Then again I've never had an item of jewellery either since it doesn't have a function other than making the owner look needy of others attention. I'd rather a decent socket set or hifi.
I appreciate your view, but for some people it's the appreciation. of the movement, the craftsmanship etc. For me, its sentimental. My husband bought me a bi-metal Aquaracer for our 10th anniversary last year and had it engraved on the case back by Tag Heuer with the dates of our wedding and 10th anniversary. For me this is one of my most prized possessions. He put thought into it and reminds me of our anniversary in Paris. It's not always about the money.

You raise a good point - I'm in awe of the craftsmanship and engineering- I just don't feel the need to own one. Just like the mona lisa really - lovely painting, but I'd get bored of it if it were hanging in my hallway.

Lovely gift, though I find that when things mean so much that it imposes an anxiety over their safety which detracts from the enjoyment.

My father has always been a watch fan, so I was almost brought up on the idea of having a good watch. As others have said, many will never really devalue either.

I invested in a Raymond Weil Tango that I wear for work (black strap, dial and bezel) and it has lasted me for around five years now - bit scratched but doing well.

For my wedding present, my wife got me a Rolex Daytona and I still love wearing it to this day on special occasions because of it's real sentimental value.

The latter should last me a lift time as it's rarely worn and I have got it serviced, so I'll probably wear it more regularly when I'm old and retired.

Is your Tango one with different coloured subdials?

....most folk seem to use their phone to tell the time these days. Watches like cameras must be impacted.

i like a watch where you can clearly see the face to tell the time. Multi-dials, stopwatches and diver information are not for me.

I bought myself a TAG about 7 odd years ago, it was for sale in standard shops for 2500 but got it for 1850 on interweb.

It is still beautiful and I love it but just remember if you buy an automatic the costs don't stop at purchase, the winder has given in so at somepoint i'm going to have to lash near £500 on a service, for a watch. Yes you read that right five hundred pounds. Gulp.
