Need some advice from you cultured folk. Want to buy a sports watch for someone who did me a good turn. Lad likes outdoorsy stuff, swimming, hiking etc so a sports watch thats hard wearing, usable daily and looks good. Budget around a grand. Any suggestions appreciated.

A grand will take you pretty far in that category, as most sports watches should be digital/quartz (as opposed to mechanical--e.g., gears/springs, which don't withstand shocks and dings, such as playing tennis, golf, or other sporting activities), and as a rule, digital/quartz are much cheaper than mechanical.
I would say that G-Shocks are widely regarded as the best sports watch. They are rugged and hard-wearing. Not all of them would be considered "daily wearing" but some certainly are:

I own this one, and it's among my favorite watches:

This one is a bit larger and also nice:

The Citizen Promaster line is quite nice, they have tons of subcategories such as Promaster Land, Promaster Air, Promaster Sea, Promaster dive. They are either quartz (usually <$500) or mechanical (= automatic, <$1000).

The other category of very outdoorsy sports watch is called the ABC watch (digital) which is Altimeter, Barometer, Compass. Though most of this technology and watch type is now merging with smart watches. But here is a link to some alternatives.

If you want to go mechanical/automatic, you can't go wrong with a good Seiko dive watch, which are usually rugged and can withstand some dings.

The Hamilton Khaki field watch is also nice:

Zodiak also came out with a unique retro-ish field watch which is quite cool (in my opinion):

@Gwladys St. Glory probably has some others to add here

Plenty of us here will help but I dunno if we're "cultured"... Since you're asking, I'm thinking you'll want to read this post I did a couple years ago. It's all the basics, so still applies.

* I just spent 5 hours, off and on, going through every post in this thread, originally looking for my post I'm referencing, but then got side-tracked *

After this experience, my suggestion is to not buy him or yourself a watch...permanent, life-altering damage may occur.

Thanks for the advice. Really like the GMB2100BD and the Hamilton out of the ones you linked. I'll have a look at the rest today. Thanks again.

EDIT: Those Promaster land are class too. Think I want one for myself. What have I done?.

If he's cut your lawn that's one thing, donated a kidney is probably another level. I'm not a watch guru of any kind but the chaps and chapettes that are might have more of an idea if the gravity of the good turn was fleshed out some?

Indeed, these small shiny objects are very dangerous to one's financial health! Proceed with caution.

That’s quite the gift, especially for something as personal as a wrist watch. Unless you’ve had some indication of preference / style I’d tread very carefully. You could pick up an Apple Watch Ultra so if they don’t really wear watches or like it at least they can return it and get some tech without any quibbling.
If you really want to spend 1k on a watch, Sinn are pretty good and currently have 10% off.
Maybe even look at a swatch x omega planets watch, not £1k but nice, hard wearing chronograph, plenty of colours to match their personality. Plus if they’re still difficult to get hold of, the thought / effort would offset the sub £1k price.
