2017/18 Wayne Rooney

He single-handedly nearly three the game away and misplaced near enough all of his passes, AGAIN.

But he’s Rooney so gets away with it.

Wrong on both counts.

He was important for us tonight and more than played his part. Silly for the pen though.

and because he is Rooney he has to prove himself to us (apart from the ones that won't accept him back regardless)

Ok, mate.

Most of Goodison must be wrong in their assessment of this over-the-hill bloater.

That’ll be the majority that chanted his name and stood to applaud him off the pitch. Was very good tonight.
He was nowhere near very good. Take the specs off. Loses the ball constantly and was subbed because he wasn't 'very good'. Atrocious at this level and will only deteriorate.

Just because a few kids chant Rooney blindly, does not mend it was a majority. We're hardly going to boo every sub off the pitch, are we? Needless to say, some of them morons used to sing songs about Hibbert and Osman.

Was great in the first half, when we’re on the front foot he can really dictate play from deep.

Showed the mistake after mistake part of his game second half though. Rightfully subbed off.

Think I’d still start him against Arsenal but look to sub him a bit earlier before he goes into self destruct mode.

We’ll be playing on the counter against Arsenal so could see him being the one to pick out Walcott on the break.

He does give the ball away a hell of a lot, for someone who wants to play in the 'Pirlo' role, you simply cannot be so wasteful. Wayne set up a goal, I have no problem with his forward play but a deep lying playmaker needs more strings to his bow than assists. His defensive side has a lot to be desired.

On 2 occasions last night he gifted the opposition the ball in dangerous areas, one was a penalty which led to a goal and the other was a terrible back pass after he had slalomed his way back towards his own area. If he can cut the stupidity out then he might settle into that role but currently, for me, he's far too sloppy in possession.

Made a couple of mistakes, the pen one could have been costly.

But for the first hour he was excellent. The number of times he switched the play when in a tight spot, getting it to a player (often Seamus) who was in space and letting us start an attack.

It’s not a coincidence that he’s played in that deep role in both our good run under Allardyce (and West Ham game) and then again last night.

Needs the legs of Davies and Gana around him in midfield though. Doesn’t work if we play Morgan Schneiderlin who hasn’t broken into a jog in about 3 months.

Because he's not a CM. He's just a superbly gifted footballer who's legs have gone to be effective in advanced positions.

He needs space now and struggles when he's closed down. But he's still head and shoulders about anyone in the side creatively (which his why I rag on Siggurdson so much).

I think if you upgrade the Davies position with a ball playing DM/CM it'll give him room to work with.

Exactly he's not a CM, surely the 10 role would be better suited but he feels the need to come deep for the ball because we don't have a ball player behind him like you say.

Don't get me wrong, he has plenty to offer just not in the deep role he craves, too wasteful.

True.

But I've said that all season. The only reason he drops deep is because we have utter crabs in midfield and a couple of others who are scared of the ball.

In that hour where he was excellent he almost gifted vardy a free run on goal with a terribly sloppy back pass that he had engineered himself by dribbling back towards his goal. I just don't see him as a deep lying ball player.

I think this is probably the crux of the matter, just having Gana playing the DM and having Davies energy was a massive difference but he needs to cut out some of his brain farts and he may well do ok there.

Agreed.

But I think someone like NZonzi we were linked with is a type of player we really need.

And an actual CM. I've always said even someone as average as a Mark Noble or Joe Allen type player (not them specifically) in there who can link attack and midfield as we don't have anyone like that in the whole squad.
