We have to get back to a four man defence

What worries me is that our wing backs just aren’t getting forward. We were at home to Forest fgs and I can’t remember Patterson or Mykolenko getting to the by-line to get a cross in!
I'd even, as a last resort, try swappng them over to see if they could cut inside and add to the attack that way.

5 at the back you need wingbacks that get forward. Mykolenko is a poor offensive player.

I’ve never understood managers who try to force a formation that doesn’t suit the players they have.

The full backs are absolutely key to the formation we are playing, and we have two that have never played anywhere near this level. Doesn’t make sense tbh.

Since Frank has come in have we actually won a single game using 3/5 at the back? It was obvious that his intentions were always to play that formation but its as though he just can't see that it doesn't suit the team.

We are conceding far too many chances as well. Brentford had to do very little to create good chances yesterday and often we were left exposed. The system simply doesn't work unless if you have players who are so much better than the opposition that they can totally dominate the match and clearly we don't have that.

I'm starting to think of Lampard as a Roberto Martinez type manager. Deluded and stubborn.

Tuesday night was the most recent win with that formation

I wondered do we have to many voices back there now and is there a bit of a leadership dynamic going on - Coady, JT and Pickford all bawling and talking consonantly. We've gone from 0-100 miles an hour.

The issue is not the 3/5 at the back, it's the fact that we are playing 2 in midfield thats the problem when most teams play with 3 so we get constantly overrun all the time. You can play with a 2, teams do do it but you need Neves/Moutinho type CM who can attack and defend which we don't have and don't seem to be looking to try and sign, Garner is about the closest thing in terms of it but is still young and inexperienced at this level. Hopefully a couple of extra bodies in this week will see us move to a more 352 rather than 523, having 3 in the middle will make a huge difference to the team. Also as much as I like the kid we have to do something about Mykolenko he just unbalances the team at the moment.

….I’m resigned to 3 at the back because that’s what Lampard and/or Thelwell want to play but yesterdays injury to Holgate surely means we have to revert to a back 4 until Holgate or Godfrey becomes available.
