We need to talk about England fans.

Should England be banned from a tournament or two?

I put other measures mainly because it should be the individuals who are publicly punished.

However, if the authorities turn around and ban the team from UEFA/FIFA international competitions then I would not complain and accept it. I agreed with somebody on the Euro thread that we have to own this as a nation and if that is what it takes to rid the game and maybe even society of these scum then so be it.

Better still just ban us for life or cancel international football altogether. Absolutely despise it the majority of the time and especially when it disrupts the momentum of the real football season with endless pointless breaks and international managers that couldn't give a toss about the well being of another clubs employee's.

What others measures could be taken in your opinion mate? Play behind closed doors for 4 years maybe?
The solution isn't football related at all. The problem's societal roots are really deep. We can't see change through measures. It's all an endless circle that those in power just play their part in, acting shocked and using it for their own political leverage. Maggie oh Maggie surely reads the lines and laughs if there is wi-fi in hell that is.

For sure but we need to take a stand at where it manifests and England fans are exactly that. Then the decent England fans need to round on them and create a new, more decent culture for those following their team. A two tournament ban or four year behind closed doors rule would give them some thinking time.

But won't that just drive all those behaviors outside the pitch (the streets, social media etc.) ? Redirecting a problem is not solving the problem at all.

You can round on them of course, but it requires getting physical and having the strength and numbers to batter them, before they batter you. That's the harsh reality. And it's a long process that has it costs, for example people getting nicked and other ugly stuff that will be exhausting for a low earning man's pocket. It's not a choice in 2021.

Middle ground solutions are more possible, but as long as they are forced by federations people will just rebel against them. It's like communism in most balkan countries. The soviet union was let's say more than forceful there, and after its reign ended, in our day most of those countries are strongly anti-communist and strongly nationalistic far right. The counter-action to every measure must be weighted because its effects sometimes are a lot more counter-productive.

I don't know if it has any bearing on things, but one thing you always notice with England fans is that it's not ever really PL fans (I'm sure there some that follow the national team) When you see all the flags in the crowd it's all for stuff like Luton Town, Mansfield, Keely Town (no idea who they are tbf) Northampton, Wealdstone FC, I think WBA was the most notable team flag I saw. It's like all these lower league fans come out and are looking for something to cling on to as they know there own team will never do anything so they just go mental.

I agree Mr B, it feels like good people are sandwiched between two sets of weirdos

It's strange that as a whole football cleaned it's act up massively, when I first started going to games racist/homophobic abuse was the norm, obviously the whole culture around that time was different with comedians etc openly telling that type of humour, the large terracing gave anonymity to people as well,So who are these people who latch onto the national team, is it small town/small minded people, you can't just blame recent politics because they were doing the same thing for years, I dont know how football can stop them

"What a relief it must be for Blair to get out of England. It is said that the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies," he wrote, referring to African people as having "watermelon smiles."

Boris Johnson.

Is it any real susprise this is happening when the person the country elected to lead us is a blatant racist. Appointing a racist has, to an extent, advocated racist abuse and shown there's a lack of accountability for it.

Some of you aren't going to agree, but your involvement in the twitter circus (and other poorly-moderated social media platforms) contributes to this environment.

These companies have shirked their responsibilities in dealing with this behaviour and they won't change until they lose users/ advertisers etc. If you're on these platforms you are perpetuating this behaviour.

'But I'm not the one posting racist or offensive messages' you might say, and you'd be exactly right, but that then puts you in the same camp as the millions of fans who follow their national teams and won't have anything to do with the minority who display these vile behaviours.

This online behaviour will continue until significant changes are made to these social media platforms.

So ban the fans or team for four years and then when they come back if they haven’t modified themselves they can have another ban. Also if the boorish fans are in such an acute minority then the majority won’t have any problem rounding up on them on vast numbers. The problem, I propose, is as much the idiots as those turning a blind eye to it or deflecting. A very English problem.
