Were You Any Good At Football When Young ?

I'd like to think I could have been but, as everyone knows, it's not played a lot in the States...in like 3rd grade I got punted in the nads during a 50/50, which dropped me like a sack o' 'taters...needless to say, I didn't want to play much after that. Could've maybe been a Vardy type...or RW.

Footy was in its absolute nadir in America during my youth, so I never played. But if my adult kickball career was any indication, I might have had some unexplored talent. Absolutely unplayable at the plate by the time I stopped, booming home runs and half volleys sprayed all over the field. Got on base pretty much every time.

Football has changed dramatically over the years in my experience. I remember being in primary school aged 10 or 11, got called into the headmasters office one day and told “you’re getting picked up at 3pm today to go and play football, your mum is going to drop your boots off” I’ve still no idea who I played for that day but my life has been football since a very young age. In secondary school I played for my local team, the school, the county and then North wales, I made my senior debut at 14 for my local men’s team, the manager would pick me up from my junior game in the morning and I’d just sit in the minibus and end up wherever we playing. At 16 I signed for a club in the then Konica league of wales, now the welsh premier league, and captained their reserves for a few years, during that time I was still representing county and north wales but also played for wales representative sides, under 16’s and 18’s. Couldn’t break into the first team at my club so moved down a few tiers but in my early twenties I suffered from knee problems so stopped playing for a few years. Eventually I had 2 ops and after a few years out of the game signed for a local team in the lower leagues, enjoyed my football there until I was about 30 then signed for a local Sunday league side where my 2 brothers and lots of my mates played… thus was my most enjoyable time playing football as I was under no pressure and playing for the enjoyment with mates. I then went into coaching and management but still playing, finally played my last competitive game at 43 years old and can say I loved every minute and miss it every day… but there you go, I tried walking football but it’s not for me. Nothing will replace that buzz of playing. I go watch games most weeks but it’s not the same.
TLDR
I was boss lar
I may have posted this after getting home from the pub last night and getting sentimental over my under achieving football career 😂

Most here have you on ignore by now so not many will have seen it mate.

Hope the hangover isn't too bad x

I had an early growth spurt which meant that I was perfect for being a CB... And a grock CB I was, one of Stoke proportions!

I had more red cards than I can remember, and made lots of little CF's cry for their mummy's. That pretty much sums up my brief foray into footy.

Played from a young age up to when I turned 20 more or less but not in clubs, so weirdly considering how much football I've played and still play I have little experience of 11s. Felt like we played everyday, was lucky to grow up beside lots of green space.

I was always a tricky dribbler forward/winger. The annoying player that sees 4 defenders in front of him and wants to take on the challenge, and wasn't best at getting my head up for the pass. Plenty of those dribbles would come off though, I had great close control. Got better at picking my moments and playing with the team in my late teens.

Then in my 20s booze and partying and being in Dublin where I didn't know anybody playing regularly meant I played almost no football. Big regret of mine

However moved to Barcelona at 33 and my god you could play every day here if you wanted, and with the transport system it's all so convenient. So last 12yrs I've played a LOT of footy and still play. Used to be 3 times a week. I've said on here before but I organise 5aside tournaments for up to 40 players all who come mainly from the two or three groups we are all part of. Being doing that most of my time here. Got another one next week. Play 6s on Wednesday and 8s on Saturday, off out in a moment. I'm second oldest of the regulars at 46 and unlike many players I adapted my game as I got older and slower. Now pretty good at keeping a team organised and talking and doing my part all around the pitch, if I do go up front I'm now more the one to hold it up, backing in and laying it off altho if I get the chance I've still a good first touch when receiving that can catch out even the quicker younger players and create the space for the shot. Good at making runs in behind and if the players are switched on enough, making passes in behind. It's the highlight of my week

Not sure if anybodys done anything similar but in a couple of groups we got sick of the level dropping with some players or players who have no idea how to play in a team and on Wednesdays we set up a new group with only 20 players of varying levels but all can play, and we mix up the teams each week for 6v6 and you get points individually for wins/draws and bonus PTS or lost PTS if you lose by 3 goals and so on from there. Only 4 games in and the level of intensity and competition is fantastic. Will enjoy this group more than anything until the day I'm not good enough for it

Not looking forward to when I stop, but enjoying every moment of it while I can!

That's the way, keep playing as long as you can get a game - once you stop its very hard to get back in to it
