Were You Any Good At Football When Young ?

This thread just makes me sad at how industry in Liverpool has been decimated. Made my adult debut at 16 against Bryant and May.
Teams in our Saturday leagues included Lucas Sports, Prescot Cables,, Dunlops, Metal Box and a host of others now well gone.
Some of these firms had brilliant facilities too and it was bloody brilliant to visit these old grounds.
Can still smell the atmosphere of those 2pm Saurday kick offs.

All had great social clubs too and the only one left is Prescot Cables :(

I loved playing but I was not good in any objective way. In the late 70s/80s me and my friends from our small Chicago suburb were "good" relative to other teams we played against, but not to any standards that would suggest quality (USA soccer in the 70s was quite poor). Despite this I've played (amateur leagues/pick up) all my life. And when I moved to where I live now, I found an amazing footie community and played from age 39 to 50. It was so much fun and I felt my "wisdom" about the game got better: you have more time on the ball than you think; look up every second; anticipate teammate's movement--obvious stuff, but not stuff I did well when young. At my age it's more about fun than skill level...make the beautiful pass, don't try out your idiotic dribbling "moves" that won't work, and especially: who gives a sh!t.

Football has changed dramatically over the years in my experience. I remember being in primary school aged 10 or 11, got called into the headmasters office one day and told “you’re getting picked up at 3pm today to go and play football, your mum is going to drop your boots off” I’ve still no idea who I played for that day but my life has been football since a very young age. In secondary school I played for my local team, the school, the county and then North wales, I made my senior debut at 14 for my local men’s team, the manager would pick me up from my junior game in the morning and I’d just sit in the minibus and end up wherever we playing. At 16 I signed for a club in the then Konica league of wales, now the welsh premier league, and captained their reserves for a few years, during that time I was still representing county and north wales but also played for wales representative sides, under 16’s and 18’s. Couldn’t break into the first team at my club so moved down a few tiers but in my early twenties I suffered from knee problems so stopped playing for a few years. Eventually I had 2 ops and after a few years out of the game signed for a local team in the lower leagues, enjoyed my football there until I was about 30 then signed for a local Sunday league side where my 2 brothers and lots of my mates played… thus was my most enjoyable time playing football as I was under no pressure and playing for the enjoyment with mates. I then went into coaching and management but still playing, finally played my last competitive game at 43 years old and can say I loved every minute and miss it every day… but there you go, I tried walking football but it’s not for me. Nothing will replace that buzz of playing. I go watch games most weeks but it’s not the same.
TLDR
I was boss lar
