Never got treadmills. So, genuine question... Why not just go outside?
We were both gym members. We're both in our mid-60s, and retired, but only went once a week do to a combination of other commitments (her) and lethargy (me). I always overdid it on the strength aperatus and found the treadmill boring. So I decided the money spent on gym subscription fees could pay for a treadmill instead, and started running on it, aided by running apps to relieve the boredom. I know we could always go for long walks, and I sometimes do, but Sue started using the treadmill before breakfast, not needing to change for outside or the gym. She now walks 2 miles on it every morning and I am using is less and less.

If there's no gym on holiday we walk a couple of miles before breakfast. But walking around Cala Bona in the morning warmth is more fun than walking round Sidcup in the morning wind, rain or both.

Fair enough, I wasn't having a pop and I know everybody's circumstances and tastes are different. I can't stand running and the thought of doing it on the spot sounds like hell to me. I will however, quite happily sweat myself stupid riding a bike nowhere staring at the kitchen wall for 2 hours at a time in the winter

I didn't take it as criticism, just an honest question. My older brother (the helicopter engineer I mentioned in the Zaha thread) is 68, still works and thinks the same as you. He walks every day since he got his new knees and is a bit of a zealot when it comes to "a brisk walk!" so you're in good company ;)

I went out with a girl from Sidcup for a while and I fully understand where you’re coming from.

The only place I found to go for a run that was remotely interesting was the park that was bordered by the college.
