I really loved Sunbather but I'm not mad on the other 2. I'm a complete mark for anything Morrissey though so this is great for me. I think Great Mass of Colour is the best thing on it with Mombasa a close second. I'm glad George, the vocalist, has kept bits of the black metal shrieks to accent certain passages like the end of the two tracks I mentioned.
I really liked the music on Sunbather - but my god his shrieks were a massive turn off

This new direction is much more my style

I loved Sunbather - although truth be told I think it's Dream House that I loved so much that drew me in. I'm not a big fan of 'metalcore' or black metal for the fact. But always paid close attention. There's no doubting that they're a band with incredible musical senses - Kerry McCoy the guitarist is a genius. He done a collar with Antwon rapper not long back which was superb.

I'm a big shoe gaze fan so for me it's a welcome switch. However, despite the Slowdive, Ride , Adorable and even Nothing influences. Listening to this feels like Deafheaven. Rivals Wold Alice for AOTY for me at the minute. Genuinely had this album on repeat all day.

This is the thing, with Black Metal in general I'm the exact same but Deafheaven was the exception. I just can't buy into something like Immortal, where the bloke looks like a badger and is shrieking about Satan with it sounding like it's been recorded in a biscuit tin. But George's vocals sound more like anguish to me. So I actually believe him when he sings.

I think it's a MOTM performance from the drummer on this. Completely anchors it, stops it from being ploddy and floating off into the ether. Ensures there is always purpose.

Is it possible to believe somebody when you can't understand what they're saying?

Take 'Dream House' for example, which looks beautifully poetic when it's written down

'Hindered by sober restlessness
Submitting to the amber crutch
The theme in my aching prose
Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan
That pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame
The rebirth of mutual love
The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly
I'm dying
Is it blissful?
It's like a dream
I want to dream'

Can't distinguish a word of it within the song

I suppose its more an emotion thing and the sound of his vocal that I think is genuine as oppose to the lyrics themselves. Which are also beautiful.

I completely get the turn off though. Its an acquired taste.

I would never begrudge another person's opinions about music - It's such a personal thing

Deafheaven for me (until this latest album) were always like cooking yourself a beautiful plate of food - and then squeezing cheap tomato ketchup all over the top of it

I think my personal limit with vocals would be the style of something like Touche Amore - Who balance heartbreaking lyrics with vocals you can decipher

This one always hits particularly hard for me

Touché should really be my kind of thing but for whatever reason it doesn't connect. And that vocal should be up my street as well. Not sure why it doesn't click.

Spot on tbf. The one thing that separates this from the plentiful imitations of Slowdive/My Bloody Valentine/Ride is the drumming. It's their benefit though, the record - despite how different it sounds - has a Deafheaven swagger to it.

Hopefully they tour this record - but doubt they'll play Liverpool tbh probs be a trek to Manchester to see it in its glory.
