I think it was more that the Pete Saville designed original sleeve cost 10p more than the record sold for, so they lost money every time it sold! No-one expected it to be a best seller, and it cost Factory something like £50,000. Later pressings were made more cheaply and made money, which the legend suggests helped to fund the Hacienda.Tony Wilson stitched them up with the contract.
