What are you currently listening to?

Just caught up on the Sky coverage of Download Festival and no wonder nearly no one my age and below cares about rock music. 4 hours of coverage and at least 80% was old school classic rock and heavy metal. The one bone they threw to a young band was Wargasm who are awful.

No wonder rock music is dead in the mainstream.

They really need to start showing the 3rd and even 4th stages.

That being said, Korn slapped.

So many of the bands I listen to now I found out about just by going to Download & staying around the smaller stages. Loathe in my opinion gave the best performance & they played on the third stage.

It's a shame how many people overlook the quality of the bands on these stages

I used to be a Kerrang acolyte - Bought every issue for a good 15 years from the early 90's onwards

Watching things like the Download coverage shows me how little things have changed over time - Just that the same bands have gotten older, slower and the new material has gotten considerably weaker

Even the 'new' bands that are featured in the modern rock mainstream lean heavily on the past

Yep, not sure I would've really left the 3rd and 4th stages this year. Bands like Creeper, Spiritbox, Loathe, Sleep Token, Venom Prison etc. Those are the bands that should be given air time.

Nobody needs to see Hallowed Be Thy Name for the 867th time.

Yeah, I love Kiss but the fact a Paul Stanley in his 70s is headlining a rock festival is mental. There's just no succession planning with Download. They need to be throwing a new headliner in every couple of years. Bring Me The Horizon should've done it on That's The Spirit, Parkway Drive have reached a point where they can do it. But the first draft pick to headline Download has to be Ghost. Surely that's only a matter of time.

I'm not sure if it's festival organisers - or actual rock/metal fans themselves

As much as I love Iron Maiden, I would much rather have watched Biffy Clyro this year, but I bet a large portion of people at Download sneered and shrugged at the inclusion of a 'pop' band headlining (Even though in reality Biffy Clyro are actually 'heavier' than Iron Maiden)

Looking at the poster, there is a fair amount of stuff that I would have loved to see (Deftones, Mastodon, Code Orange, Loathe, Spiritbox) but my word there is some derivative pish washing around the hard rock circuit nowadays
