The greatest ever album.

Nice! Tho' I'd respectfully disagree with the rankings.

For me, Bitches Brew is the seminal Miles work. Had it on CD for the last two decades but recently bagged it on japanese-quad LP from Discogs. Had a nice chat with the seller from over there, the japanese love their fusion! I'd personally also rank Sketches of Spain, Aura, In A Silent Way and Siesta above Kind of Blue.

Bitches Brew Quad is an interesting fresh listen on my pair of studio monitors, tho' it's ideally made for a true 4.0 setup, but rigging up 70's style quad-Hifi to get the true mix-intention is a bit of a mission...not sure if I'll ever get round to it, also got Floyd's Atom Heart Mother on quad LP, so maybe I should...tho' realistically will try a home-made 4.0 faux-quad setup.

On that note...here's the emotional rollercoaster that is Sanctuary from BB:

@ Star Wars music fans.

i've been working my way through the massive Magma discography and just now found this fantastic piece:

Between 2:30 - 4:00 it really reminds me of the victory song at the end of Return of the Jedi (1983). This Magma performance is from 1980.

Interestingly, as I went youtube-hunting to quickly confirm, it turns out that all those horrifically-'enhanced' Special Editions of the original trilogy have even replaced that victory song with some generic guff. Bit more hunting revealed the original music:

Am I hearing things or is that at least thematically similar to the Magma?

John Williams's Star Wars scores are known for being inspired by other works, most famously by the aforementioned Holst's Planets.

Fusion is most certainly not for me and i look on bitches brew as nothing more than an indulgence. That whole era of jazz smacks of emperors new clothes to me. Aura sounds like something knocked up for use by 80s porn studios.

lol Aura sounds like a jazzy Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Tutu is Miles's porn soundtrack, i reckon.

I know every lick of Bitches Brew, so addictive and full of story-telling...expertly put together by Teo Macero. Most of my jazz-listening is fusion, a lot from that glorious late-60's-to-mid-70's period. Sun Ra's Lanquidity is another classic. Also love me some Gong who often seasoned their eccentric prog with jazz flavours.

A Kind of Blue is nice but a bit dinner party. And hardcore bop like Coltrane just sounds like noise to me (despite Coltrane being Magma's biggest influence, according to their band-leader).

What's your top 3 jazz records out of interest?

i'd go Bitches Brew, Lanquidity and Sketches of Spain.

Tough for me to select particular albums in this spotify age, the first i ever bought was kind of blue on cd about 25 years ago. Completely on a whim, it was on a listening post in the virgin megastore and it just blew me away. Though it was my intro to the jazz world i never really ventured much further in. A couple of compilation albums of chick corea and wynton marsallis didn't really encourage me to delve deeper and i primarily stuck my limited spare cash into a blend of mid 90s indie/grunge, house music, chemical brothers and the beastie boys!

These days, jazz tends to feature heavily in my listening but exclusuvely via streaming where the tendency is to compile playlists rather than whole albums. Early 50s to mid 60s hard bop, some cool and pretty much anything derived from that style. Anything avant garde/fusion is out for me, though i do love birdland by weather report.

Music that features most in my scattered listening include most if bot all of miles davis output up to early 60s, hank mobley, art blakey, dexter gordon, horace silver, freddie hubbard, jj johnson, some coltrane and limited mingus amongst a variety of others.

I think if pushed for full albums, Ascenseur pour l'echafaud score, jj inc, and rather more recent, oneness from matthew halsall tend to get full listens.

Enjoyed reading that despite our musical differences

I listen to albums mostly, as still using physical media like LP's and CD's.

Also was into USgrunge & BritEDM in the mid-90's, some of which i still enjoy now, so good it's aged.

Here's some:
