What are you currently listening to?

Nice! Tho' I'd respectfully disagree with the rankings.

For me, Bitches Brew is the seminal Miles work. Had it on CD for the last two decades but recently bagged it on japanese-quad LP from Discogs. Had a nice chat with the seller from over there, the japanese love their fusion! I'd personally also rank Sketches of Spain, Aura, In A Silent Way and Siesta above Kind of Blue.

Bitches Brew Quad is an interesting fresh listen on my pair of studio monitors, tho' it's ideally made for a true 4.0 setup, but rigging up 70's style quad-Hifi to get the true mix-intention is a bit of a mission...not sure if I'll ever get round to it, also got Floyd's Atom Heart Mother on quad LP, so maybe I should...tho' realistically will try a home-made 4.0 faux-quad setup.

On that note...here's the emotional rollercoaster that is Sanctuary from BB:

I'm a purist and really not a fan of anything Miles did post 1963 . In fact I can only just about stomach ESP. I blame the influence of a 17 year old Tony Williams lol . That's not quite correct as one of my favourite Miles Recordings is the Complete Concert 1964 , released somewhat confusingly in 1965.

So yes I adore Sketches and also Milestones but for me Kind of Blue will always be the greatest pieces of music ever written and played.

Quad albums , yes I had a couple in the 70's . The pressings and sound quality was off the scale. Used to play it on a beautiful Micro Seiki DD 40 turntable with SME arm and Ortofon Moving Coil , Harmon Kardon Citation 14 series pre and power amp with Radford Tristar T 90 speakers. Boy I wish I still had that set up!

aye, it does seem either one enjoys the bop/modal-era or the fusion/avant-garde era...but rarely both. Sketches of Spain excepted...everyone loves that, even my lady who normally can't stand jazz.

Did your old setup utilise 4 speakers? Back then one also needed a Quad Amp/Receiver and even specialist cartridges to properly decode the Quad signal. That equipment was discontinued in the 80's, rare and pricey stuff nowadays.

Everyone i've spoken to or read online report Vinyl Quad 4.0 was an incredible listening experience, superior to modern digital 5.1 surround. I guess because back then they painstakingly mixed down into tastefully-arranged channels, rather than the random scatter approach of music mastered in 5.1.

Shame it never took off...there's something to be said for enjoying favourite musik in hi-fidelity settings, but i guess it was too fiddly and expensive for most to bother with.

No my system wasn't set up for that.

The recordings still sounded lovely even in stereo although not , perhaps , as it was intended to sound.
