What defines an Everton legend?

I mean, I personally think Cahill is a legend, despite what I've said about honours. Simply because he more than made up for his lack of honours elsewhere while he was with us. He was Everton personified. But he's a massive exception when you think about the players we've had over the past decade.

Regrettably, I'd have Baines down as more of a cult hero, despite the username.
This sums it up for me. When people see the name and think of Everton regardless of whether they're Evertonians or not.

The Everton miscellany has pages on Everton legends, but with no Bob Latchford, Kevin Ratcliffe or Kevin Sheedy . And Moyes mentioned as a legend. I am clueless as to what a legend is. (but most of the book is quite good)

To be a Legend, surely your name must be synonymous with Everton FC to an outsider?

Otherwise, if we agree it's a personal thing, then Duncan McKenzie is one

@MoutsGoat is right.

A legend is a personal thing. I reckon a lot of younger fans would have Cahill or Big Dunc as legends. I probably wouldn't.

Alan Ball certainly sounds one from all I'm ever told and the bits I've seen.

Southall is the greatest goalkeeper of all time. And is the reason I went in nets and acted the fool while there. Total legend. But again to me.
Never got to see Nev play. But I always go on about Courtois and Neuer and he said 'you know the flying saves that these keepers make? Well Big Nev used to catch them'.

Shame I never got to see him.

In his prime he was world class.

Unfortunately, towards the latter stages of his Everton career he was slow and flat-footed. I seem to remember him conceding numerous goals from distance that sailed in as he got caught off his line

Andy Gray is a legend for me. He played every game like it was the last he'd ever play and he was, in my opinion, absolutely critical to one of our greatest ever teams.

I wouldn't have Linekar, Cahill or Ferguson. In fact I wouldn't have anyone since possibly Watson who I loved. Southall obviously but more for who he was in the 80s rather than the late 90s!

I've already given my opinion on both Gray and Lineker, and agree with you on both points.

However, I think Cahill and Ferguson may be classed as legends by younger fans who haven't witnessed the 80s team, or perhaps not even the mid 90s team.

All boils down to what you've seen, and how that related to your view of the club
