What makes a good Captain?

The team under Moyes had what looked like a good team spirit generally and like him or hate him Neville was a part of that.

McCarthy would be a decent option I reckon.

I think that was largely due to Moyes preferring characters who didn't upset the apple cart first and foremost, and Neville as a captain was a passive presence who allowed the squad to be themselves.

I don't see that as a good captain though, as it isn't a leader, it's just someone who won't take a risk to jeopardise his own position at the club. Basically, Neville ingratiated himself into anyone and everyone of influence, adapting to other peoples' beliefs rather than lead with his own character, of which he has none.

Think a good captain should be willing to disagree with the manager and stand up for his players as well, if the situation needs be.

mature, central position, confident, class player, looks unflappable and he takes responsibilty, not just as a professional but with the ball, he's an example

Captains in our current squad for me are Jags, Baines, Barry. Stones and McCarthy has potential; to be captain for a good few years. It's not about ability, it's about who they are, most of us will never see that on a day to day basis.

A good captain gets the best out of his team mates, Mike Brearley rarely contributed a major innings to the England cricket team but was a very successful captain, I'm not sure if he was any good at footy though.

IMO, the team I've seen most blessed with 'captains' was Mourinho's Chelsea first time round.

Terry, Lampard, Drogba. One in each position.

A captain is someone who the entire team respects and listens to, someone who can stand up for his players. As well as represent the club on and off the pitch.
