Hope he doesn't find those pockets of space today

In reality though, Mata operates in what may be considered a “false” wing position. As was the case during his most successful days at Chelsea (before the arrival of the Special One), Mata is most effective drifting about and finding the space that best allows him to produce moments of inspiration.

And how he is delivering those moments right now. The 27-year-old has been directly involved in almost everything good produced by United this season and an integral part of their rise up the table. There were many who believed that Louis van Gaal’s men would struggle near the top this season, perhaps believing that Chelsea, Arsenal and rivals Manchester City had more to offer. Though their humbling at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday may suggest they are still a little short of a proper title challenge, with Mata and company performing at the top of their game, anything is possible.

While his performances and abilities are only just beginning to really catch the eye, perhaps because of the buzz surrounding some excellent early showings by Anthony Martial, Mata’s quality and prominence at Old Trafford is not a new phenomenon. He has scored or assisted just under half of the goals netted by United players so far in the campaign, resulting in an assist, or a goal, (or both) in five of his last seven league outings. The visit to the Emirates Stadium aside though, where truthfully all of the team played poorly, Mata has been particularly impressive in recent fixtures—evident no more so than in games against Sunderland and Wolfsburg.

In these games the former Chelsea man put in Man of the Match showings, and was on hand to provide both a goal and an assist apiece. The aforementioned episode of brilliance against Wolfsburg was symbolic of the confidence running through Mata at the moment, as was his willingness to take a penalty with Wayne Rooney also on the pitch. Such is the form of Mata “out wide” at the moment, that you can only imagine the levels that he would be reaching if his manager was willing to drop his under-performing captain.
